will do us all in. If we stopped carbon emissions today (fat chance) it's probably too late. Our grandkids will hate us because we knew and did very little. Greta speaks for that generation. We'd better listen to her.

So for an American one, it is probably around 1 billion.

We passed 1 billion right around 1804, just for reference.

truth be known, we're already there. The magnitude of effort to stop what is already happening is well beyond the ability of the world to change. We can slow it down A LITTLE, but little else. And not all processes are reversible. We could ultimately reduce carbon content of the atmosphere to pre-2000 levels, but much of the damage has been done to things like glaciers and ice shelves. Extinctions have started, and water has already started to rise. There is little we can do at this point other that to begin to deal with the consequences and help those that will/have been displaced.

Trying to reverse the damage now is like slamming on the brakes at 100 mph three feet from the cliff edge

can prevent worst case scenarios still. The goal is to keep the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. We probably won’t prevent that but we can keep it far under the doomsday scenario of 4 degrees if we act significantly by 2030.

It has to get so bad that people in the industrialized countries are dying by the millions from the effects of climate change before anything significant will be done. Of course, by then it will be too late if it isn't too late already.
