Back when the workday was changed from 12 to 8 hours, the workweek from 60 to 40 hours, business owners screamed bloody murder about how they'd never survive such a shortened schedule. They then quickly realized that the workers were vastly more productive with the shorter hours.

In lots of jobs, there is a great deal of wasted time. I think I've seen things that say that most office workers actually work only about 4 hours of the day. The rest of the time is goofing off or socializing or whatever.

When I was first in the working world, over 50 years ago now, I thought that a 40 hour work week was entirely too long, but of course I was stuck with it. I'm retired now, and my last three years working was part time, a 20 hour week at the information desk in my city's hospital. That was ideal.

I've also never had a job that I really loved, and say that not working is far better than working. I don't get those people who can't endure retirement, and get another job almost right away. Now, I understand if you need the money. But if you don't, there are so many other things to do. Lots of volunteering is possible. Personally, I'd love to travel more, but money is an issue, meaning I can't afford all of the travel I'd like to take. But it's not as though I can't go plenty of places. And now, the things I love to do, like my science fiction things, are coming back. Hooray!
