WASHINGTON ― Six months after their leader tried to overturn the election he had lost by more than 7 million votes, Republicans have settled on a message about the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol: Insurrection? What insurrection?
From calls to let bygones be bygones, to punishing dissidents who dare criticize former President Donald Trump for instigating that days attack, to literally describing the mob as no different from everyday tourists, the Republican Party ― with notable exceptions ― has pushed the idea that the unprecedented attempt to overthrow American democracy was really no big deal.
And, if recent polling is correct, they appear to be succeeding. According to a recent Morning Consult survey, fully 41% of Americans believe that the riot of Jan. 6 has received too much attention, compared with 50% who do not. That figure is driven by 68% of Republicans who say that but includes more than a third of independents and even a quarter of Democrats.
Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor who believes the country barely dodged a constitutional crisis on Jan. 6, said many Americans simply would rather not think about that day.

(22,124 posts)they more vocal about republicans and their attempts on 1/6 to overthrow the govt? Where are our leaders? I feel that they are all in the woodwork and / or disappeared and / or not being vocal enough, or if they are, I certainly don't see them. They should be pounding the drums, should be rabid in the tooth about the roles these thugs (republicans) played in the events of 1/6/21. I know that multiple prosecutions are underway, but I want to see snarling, the grinding of teeth, more drama to excite our voter base, keep them interested and vested in this whole process of saving our democracy. All I read constantly are articles like this 'republicans are hiding 1/6/21', 'republicans deny 1/6/21 happened', 'republicans say tourists did the stuff on 1/6/21 and it wasn't them', and on and on and on.
We need an effective overall national democratic response to these efforts (are they any) and these need to be coordinated nationally and constantly and immediately. Are our leaders afraid to rock the boat, stir the muddy waters, afraid of taking more aggressive steps that are needed to hammer home that insurrections are not allowed in this Country, that elections aren't won by thuggish actions, but by voters as they always have been? By the way, who is our national democratic leader (besides Biden)?
A national mandate has already been sent by our voters for a nation wide democratically led Congress and Exec. Branch...do something, be vocal, be aggressive, be pro-voter, defend our damn right to vote and be vocal about it, for God's sake. Rant over.

(53,778 posts)of the insurrection. It was led by Speaker Pelosi, a Democrat. Also the proposal for a Jan. 6 commission was led by Democrats but was voted down by republicans.
And now Speaker Pelosi has formed a House Select Committee to investigate the insurrection.
Have you not heard of any of this?

(22,124 posts)GOP this, GOP that. I'm allowed a rant occasionally, as most DUers are. And yes, I've heard of these things going on, very very slowly. Might be all done and over with (the select committee) maybe in four years or so?

(53,778 posts)to expose the traitors behind the insurrection both inside and outside the Congress. It will go on for months as many will be subpoenaed.
The Speaker I'm sure has an eye on the '22 mid-terms so it'll wrap up before then and it's report will likely be timed for release just before the election to gain maximum value for us Dems.

(22,124 posts)racing down the highway at too high a speed, and the police pull them over for speeding (and it could be a congressperson or regular person, doesn't matter, they are still pulled over and issued a ticket).
We seen these republican lawmakers (on camera too) mixed in w/ these thugs when they broke into the proceedings on Congress and interrupted them). Why haven't they been arrested (like the many protesters who are getting arrested, roughly 500 or so so far), for at least participating in a riot or something similar, unlawfully interrupting a proceeding of Congress, etc. Make them walk the walk of shame.
