The US today is a condo in south Florida

Built on sand and reclaimed fill. Not like the older buildings which actually sat on bedrock. Many of the problems are known but ignored. People in supposedly responsible positions figure they won’t be around when the shit hits the fan. No one wants to pay for necessary repairs. Changing climate and what that means is ignored. In a short time the latest collapse will be forgotten.

are being flooded more frequently too, by rising sea levels. In some areas they've built retaining walls but it's not a full blown effort, as vast areas are still unprotected. All one needs is an unprotected gap and then everything gets flooded. Not a pleasant prospect.
