Twit on a plane

Young lady walked into the plane today, removed her mask, and REFUSED to put it on. She kind of hid it until I, the unfortunate soul sitting next to her, complained (after asking her twice to put her mask on). The Captain came over the intercom and reminded us to put on our masks. The flight attendant asked her five times but nope.

They were detaining her as we de-planed. I hope she gets put in a do not fly list.

1. Did they detain her as you deplaned in your destination -

or did they deplane you at the origin to remove her?

(And, if the former, I hope they at least reseated you.)

I might have done something to get the plane turned around. Probably not - but that royally pisses me off. AA off my list of airlines to fly on, if there are any other choices.

I’m sitting there thinking, “Look I am vaccinated and wearing an N95. I’m probably fine no matter what. How big of a stink do you want to make?”

In the end, it was the elderly lady next to me on the other side that made me think, I need to speak up. She was obviously near 70 and did NOT have on an N95

I'm about to have a really uncomfortable conversation tomorrow - largely on behalf of my employee who has much more at stake, but lacks the status or I-could-retire-tomorrow-so-I-don't-really-give-a-damn posture I have.

I've been back to work since August - 6-7 days a week, and feel pretty confident in my ability to protect myself. I have been masking all along, with well-fitting, multi-layered masks, and will continue to do so.

That said, the second-hand information I heard today is that we are not allowed to require students to wear masks in our office, not allowed to ask students if they are vaccinated, and not allowed to hold masked meetings in our office and meetings outside our office with students who aren't masked. Not allowed to post a sign requesting masking. It is all one or the other (no one in our office - or everyone in, regardless of masking).

I have already told her that, while I can't guarantee someone else won't take disciplinary action - I will not discipline her if she chooses to require students to mask in her office, or to meet in her office only with masked students (and elsewhere with others).

I find it unconscionable that we are being told that we are not allowed to set rules in our own offices that can keep us safe. She has small children, one with a condition that would make it very dangerous for her to bring COVID home.

So I expect that to be hashed out tomorrow when we are formally told the rules.

So - like you, I'm sticking my neck out on behalf of someone else. I'm not really questioning myself - but my employee should not have to fear job loss or discipline simply to do her job and keep her family safe.

...and were allowed to fly out the following day!

https://viewfromthewing.com/teenagers-who-staged-a-mask-protest-forced-to-spend-night-in-charlotte-airport/

American Airlines flight AA893 from Charlotte to Nassau went mechanical on Monday, and the airline switched aircraft to get passengers on their way. Already delayed several hours, tensions were running high. And a group of high school students on board chose the moment they were on their second aircraft, ready to depart, to stage a mask protest that “lasted for hours.”

American ditched plans to operate the flight, put some of the passengers up in hotel rooms, and scheduled a departure for Tuesday instead.
