On a visit to Europe to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war, Donald Trump insisted to his then chief of staff, John Kelly: Well, Hitler did a lot of good things.
The remark from the former US president on the 2018 trip, which reportedly stunned Kelly, a retired US Marine Corps general, is reported in a new book by Michael Bender of the Wall Street Journal.
Frankly, We Did Win This Election has been widely trailed ahead of publication next week. The Guardian obtained a copy.
Bender reports that Trump made the remark during an impromptu history lesson in which Kelly reminded the president which countries were on which side during the conflict and connected the dots from the first world war to the second world war and all of Hitlers atrocities.

(11,256 posts)How many horrible, anti-American things does he have to hear from Trump to speak out, beyond just a generic "he said some shocking things" admission? Trump allegedly made the "suckers and losers" comment at the grave of Kelly's son, and yet Kelly stayed on the job and never spoke out publicly. And now this comes out, and again Kelly never spoke out. I don't know how that guy looks in the mirror each day.

(2,787 posts)but this is a died-in-the-wool military man of the "older generation." I actually think of him as one generation before me. The rules and regulations and hierarchy are to be obeyed to the nth degree. The comment at the grave no doubt cut Kelly to the quick; but it was his Commander-in-Chief that said the words; no way could he have spoken back to him... nor would his son.
Being a veteran, myself, and working afterwards in DoD, I can tell you the respect is to the office - not the man. And one dares not disrespect the office. Doesn't mean the words that are uttered (or not spoken) hurt any less. Just don't expect Kelly to ever "dis" Trump; it's absolutely not in his DNA.
Meanwhile, I don't know what *I* as a little younger Veteran, am suppose to do with the white hot rage I feel towards Trump and the Insurrectionists, and what they want to do to the country I defended. I'm suppose to suppress my feelings towards a traitor? I absolutely believe Trump should be arrested immediately, put on trial for treason, and sentenced to either death or hard time in life in prison. I personally am against the death penalty; I can make an exception for traitors who've sold out our country and continue to be a National Security threat (which I wholeheartedly believe Trump to be).

(1,202 posts)Kelly's oath was to the the Constitution. It was not to a "man" or to the office of the presidency. What Kelly did was inexcusable and as anti-American as it gets. A true patriot would have resigned and immediately went public with all the trash Trump was doing. Instead, Kelly lied to all of us, and helped be an enabler to an enemy occupant.

(10,171 posts)Because what he really admired about Hitler was that he was a ruthless dictator. But Ts knowledge of history was limited to comic books and jingoistic war movies. He wouldnt be able to tell you how the war started, all the countries involved, or how America became involved.

(19,193 posts)world history he probably couldn't pass a 5th grade history test. Yet he boasts that "nobody knows more about history than I do", making himself look like the biggest fool on the planet. Of course his brain-dead acolytes believe everything he says, so I guess they're the biggest fools on the planet.

(15,031 posts)but his support of these "progressive ideals" must always be tempered with the knowledge of what he intended them for.
He was the first national leader to advocate universal physical fitness among both the youth and the adult population.
He was the first national leader to commission the building of an interstate highway system.
He was the first national leader to pursue fuel-efficient transportation for the masses -- the Volkswagen.
He was the first national leader to organize an anti-smoking campaign and to pursue health coverage for all citizens.
His purpose for these ideals, however, negate their limited usefulness under the Third Reich.
He needed physically fit soldiers for his wars and strong workers for his armaments factories. The initial autobahn routes went mainly west to east, supply lines for an extended two front war. Fuel efficiency for the masses ensured the Wehrmacht would have the resources it needed for the struggles ahead. And a healthy, outwardly happy populace was needed for the support of the master race he envisioned whose fathers would be the SS. Universal health care* also ensured universal knowledge of those who had debilitating, terminal conditions, so their "removal" could be more readily facilitated.
There are other examples, but it's late and Hitler bores me.
