Food waste is becoming more and more of a known issue, with American consumers wasting nearly 40% of the food they buy, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Why, then, are hot-dog makers and hot-dog-bun bakers not doing their part?
Hot dogs, says Heinz Ketchup Canada in a new video, often come in packs of 10, while hot-dog buns regularly come in groups of eight. (I might argue their numbers. I don't always see 10/8 groupings, but there's no denying they never seem to match up.)
Why can't Big Bun and Big Dog get together on this?
Steve Martin's character in the 1991 film Father of the Bride made this point 30 years ago, with different numbers.

(36,375 posts)I had to purchase 4 packages of hot dogs and 5 packages of buns. I used to purchase purchase 8 packages of hot dogs and 10 packages of buns until a pocket protector egghead sage with 4 packages of hot dogs and 5 packages of buns in his cart explained the 'New Math' to me.

(63,889 posts)That's why we have freezers in our refrigerators! So much joy knowing you won't waste anything if you don't particularly want them right now and evening up your ratio of bun to hot dog or vice versa.

(1,495 posts)Nathan's comes in an 8 pack and the Sahlen's hot dogs I buy come in a 3lb bag. If I buy Nathan's, the 8 pack of rolls is fine. If I buy Sahlen's, I need to buy multiple packs of rolls. I could see how this would be annoying though if there was a 10 pack of hot dogs. Sometimes I forget to buy hot dog rolls and I use a slice of white bread for the rolls. I guess if I had 10 hot dogs and only 8 rolls, I'd eat the extra hot dogs on regular bread.

in the sauce with red onions and the two leftover hot dogs cut up into little slices grilled in our cast iron skillet (hatch chilies added if just me and Laz) and mixed in with the sauce before being poured over the cooked macaroni.
The granddaughters love Puppy Mac.

(32,074 posts)Is there some unwritten law that says one can only put hot dogs on hot dog buns? We can't use the two leftovers for lunch meat sandwiches? Or, a sandwich made of some of the leftover fried chicken from the cookout where the hot dogs were served, and have it for lunch the next day? Or, turn them into garlic bread?
I get the point they're trying to make about wasting food, but I feel their time would be better spent by suggesting ways people could stop wasting it.

(1,399 posts)There used to be a little grill in Winston-Salem that served regular gyros rolled in a regular pita. Pretty damn good gyros.
They also served "junior" gyros on hot dog buns for less than half the price. These tasted just fine - just like a gyro, only lacking a little in the texture department.
Brilliant, for the little kids, or if you couldn't eat a whole one.
I wonder if the grill is still there. It was out on a corner near Baptist Hospital.

(7,510 posts)All they have are buns that have been wrecked by being sliced down the center of the top!
And hamburger buns? What the hell is a "bulkie roll"?

(1,586 posts)Bulkie rolls make awesome sandwiches. New England hit dog rolls are cut from the top and backed together to make them perfect for grilling!

(31,261 posts)The premium brands like Hebrew National package in packs of 4. I know this because the few times I buy hotdogs, it is HN, so I have four buns left over. My parents taught me to never waste food, so I use the extra buns for other food purposes.

(18,497 posts)I buy hotdogs maybe once a year.
Whatever filler or additive is in most of the others make me sleepy and lethargic for hours afterward.
And those really cheap ones with the bright red dye that are sold in the south?
Oh gross.

(31,261 posts)Ball Park is marginal in flavor or texture, I will use them in hotdogs and beans very infrequently. Fortunately in Florida, Publix has a 2 for the price of one sale on hotdogs occasionally, when I notice that, I sometime pick up the extra pack, though I have shown up at the register and had to be reminder that I only picked up one pack, the cashier send a bagging kid out to pick up the second pack. I love Hebrew National hotdogs in fresh bread topped with homemade tomato salsa.

Poor people don't throw out oddball buns. People affluent enough to afford convenience over frugality throw out oddball buns.

Actually, there's only two of us in the house, so typically, we break up the packages of hot dogs when we get home from the store.

(146,254 posts)We don't eat hot dogs often, though. I'm not particularly bothered by the discrepancy in number in any case. We normally eat four hot dogs between my wife and I. I cook six wieners, though. Two of them get cut into eight pieces and are tossed to our beagle and beagle/basset mix to keep them from nosing us to let us know they also enjoy the occasional hot dog.
What happens to the excess buns? Tossed out. It's a minor issue.
