Letters to the Editor: The simple reason California is under one-party rule? The GOP is awful

LA Times via Yahoo News

To the editor: Jonah Goldberg complains that California's single-party rule leaves Republicans with no alternative except a recall. I have an idea for the state GOP: Become an American political party living in the 21st century.

Gun violence isn't reduced by allowing larger-capacity magazines and higher fire rates. California has an infant mortality rate of about 4 per 1,000 live births; nationally, the rate is 5.6, and Republican-controlled states that refused to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act have rates above the national average. The same is true for maternal mortality.

California's COVID-19 infection rate is well below the national average. Democrats did not storm the nation's capital and attempt to end American democracy.

The solution for California Republicans is not to complain about Democrats; it's for them to fix their party.

Townhall in California. All they can do is disrupt and scream right wing media, racist talking points. At the same time, there are millions of such folks plugged into that hermetically sealed reality where Trump won the election, COVID-19 is a hoax, and the vaccine is filled with people tracking microchips.

On the national level, the GOP didn't even bother to create a platform in 2020, instead relying on the Trump cult's fear-mongering to sway voters. In California, that strategy buried the GOP, starting in 1994 with the bigotry of Proposition 187.

The California GOP doesn't need recalls or petty grievances; it needs ideas, for a change.

And now the Republicans are trying to restrict voting, and create situations where their state legislatures can nullify elections. Why? Because they know their position on almost all major issues is a minority position.

If all states had open, honest, fair elections where the voting process was geared to get the most people possible into the voting booth, there would be a lot more one party states.

The fact that the Republicans can't win with such a scenario is called the "will of the people".

But with with affordable housing at such a tremendous shortage people are actually leaving the state or living on the streets. And more are leaving than coming. However, this article has relatively good statistics on the exchange...

https://www.ppic.org/blog/whos-leaving-california-and-whos-moving-in/

"... People who move to California are different from those who move out. In general, those who move here are more likely to be working age, to be employed, and to earn high wages—and are less likely to be in poverty—than those who move away.

Those who move to California also tend to have higher education levels than those who move out—an especially important factor given the state’s strong need for college graduates. Notably, this gain in educated residents is concentrated among young college graduates (generally, adults in their 20s) looking for opportunities as they start their careers..."

Called in GOP parlance "Democrat run cities." The media never seems to ask, why don't Republicans ever run for Mayor of Los Angeles, Chicago, etc., and introduce new ideas? The real answer is, they don't want the job - mayor of a large city would be a dead end on Republican career track - and they don't have any ideas besides Dirty Harry policing and marching in Federal troops with bayonets fixed at first sign of unrest. This sells well to some people who would never set foot in those cities but not so well with the actual electorate of such places.

If the majority votes that should stand. Not to do so disenfranchises the voter.

...the op-ed did say:

The only way to cure one-party rule is to reform the opposing party — in this case, the GOP — to be competitive. Recalls put off that reckoning....

The only lasting fix for one-party rule is two-party competition. And that remains a pipe dream for the foreseeable future.
