I wonder if he has ever shot up road signs.

(6,401 posts)Yeah, it's apparently a thing. Hear something moving in the bushes, take a shot and hope you get lucky.
There was also a story making the rounds years ago of someone who lived in the country and placed deer replicas around his property during hunting season. He would extract the lead shot & bullets from the replicas and sell it for a little extra spending money.

(6,401 posts)But, what the actual F?? Not charged? Hunting deer with a pistol, at night and, taking a 200 yard shot??
Not charged???

(15,426 posts)But sitting on the bench with gf just talking and all of a sudden take a bullet in the head? From some dumb ass gun nut?
Life. No parole. The jerk walked away. He. Walked. Away.

(6,401 posts)he may have walked because he was in a state of shock. I know I would be if I'd made such an horrific mistake.
On the other hand.....

(15,426 posts)You face the music. You don't run away. Because you know if you do, when you finally get caught, which you will, it will be worse than if you faced up to it when you did it.
Well...I don't.

(113,971 posts)clothes on a line outdoors tragically shot in her own backyard by a hunter years ago--I think in Connecticut. When it was widely reported, all kinds of similar incidents came to light across the country.
Tragic doesn't begin to cover it.

(32,354 posts)There's always the possibility being the victim of some moron who shouldn't be trusted with a can opener, much less a high-powered hunting gun. I hope the shooter does the full 20 years---he's now in the sort of state property he ought to be in.

(34,195 posts)I don't see how the location was a factor.
It was 'hunter' stupidity.

(32,354 posts)Like state parks.

(34,195 posts)It is a hunter friendly state and much of it is open and free for hunting,
not only state parks.
But, hey, blame it on the state park if you choose.

(24,983 posts)People who are not hunters go to state parks to hike and do other outdoor recreation, not realizing that they are potential targets during hunting season. Someone might think a stat park is a safe place and find themselves shot at.
Maybe state parks should be closed to non-hunters during hunting season?

(40,365 posts)As a rule, I stay out of the fields and woods during hunting season and it doesn't matter if the land is a publicly or privately owned land.
While I could argue that I have the right to be in such areas where legally permitted, I'll always lose a debate with a speeding bullet.

(37,512 posts)snip--The shooting sparked an intense investigation and for more than two months, Bucks County detectives Timothy Campbell and Michael Walp worked tirelessly on the case, tracking down three vehicles seen at the state park the day of the shooting. One of those vehicles, belonged to Heller. Detectives interviewed Hellers co-workers who said he did not report to work the Monday after the shooting and was visibly shook up when returned on Tuesday. The co-workers also told detectives that shortly after the shooting Heller gave away guns, ammunition and hunting gear. Detectives searched Hellers vehicle and home on Dec. 10, finding a .17-caliber Marlin rifle, ammunition for the rifle and an orange hunting vest with a 2020 hunting license issued to Kenneth Heller affixed to the back of the vest. Detectives also found metal knuckles with a dagger attached.

(2,710 posts)The saying was know your target and beyond. He didn't know his target, he didn't know what was beyond his target, he just saw movement and fired. Then he walked away. 20 years should have been the minimum.

(3,436 posts)I remember when they used to be concerned about that kind of stuff. They would actually come into schools and do gun safety talks.
I've never hunted myself, but I waitressed in a rural (and therefore, hunting) community for a few years. After meeting and talking to hunters for a while, I did get an appreciation for them and looked at them totally differently than I had. A vast majority were pretty damn serious conservationists when it came to their kills, and ALL were fanatical about gun safety. Unfortunately, too many "shoot at whatever moves, and check later" folks out there with guns now.

(188 posts)I have a friend who lives on the edge of a state park in WI. He leaves during deer gun season and generally has at least 1 deer slug in his house each year. Seems some just don't look beyond what they are targeting.
Getting a hunting license should be as hard as getting a drivers license, but it seems it's pretty easy.

(37,761 posts)There are certainly a lot of questions remaining here.
It's a good thing he was caught because there is a part of me thinking that if he wasn't, we would have heard about another "accidental shooting" in that area sooner or later.

(40,365 posts)Which is what they often do when an innocent is seriously injured or killed by an incompetent who owns guns.
20 years ought to be the standard for any gun owner whose gun(s) were improperly stored or handled and which caused the death of an innocent.
