A controversial priest in Wisconsin has been removed from his parish after making a number of remarks about politics and against pandemic restriction measures.
On Friday, Bishop William Patrick Callahan issued a decree immediately removing the Rev. James Altman as pastor of St. James the Less, a parish in La Crosse, Wis. about 140 miles northwest of Madison.
[Callahan] and his diocesan representatives have spent over a year, prayerfully and fraternally, working toward a resolution related to ongoing public and ecclesial concerns of the ministry of Fr. James Altman, a statement of the diocese said. The obligation of a Bishop is to ensure that all who serve the faithful are able to do so while unifying and building the Body of Christ.
The decree is effective immediately and for an indeterminate period of time. During this time Fr. Altman, must refrain from exercising the function of pastor, the diocese said.
Altman is described by the National Catholic Reporter as a rogue Wisconsin priest who flouted COVID-19 protocols at the height of the pandemic, derided liberals as left-wing fascist Nazis, and warned that Catholics who support the Democratic Party could face the fires of hell.
