Florida resident detained as part of Haiti investigation: What we know

A team of U.S. law enforcement officials arrived in Haiti on Monday to help with the sweeping investigation into the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, as police in the Caribbean country identified a new suspect: a 63-year-old Haitian man who lived in Florida.

Christian Emmanuel Sanon, who has lived in in Broward County and in Hillsborough County on the Gulf Coast of Floriday, was detained by police on Sunday evening.

Officials said Moïse’s alleged killers were protecting the Sanon and that he wanted to be president of Haiti. Sanon identifies himself as a doctor and has accused Haitian leaders of corruption.

“We continue to make strides,” Léon Charles, the head of Haiti's police, said of the efforts to solve the brazen attack early Wednesday at Moïse’s private home, which left the president dead and his wife, Martine Moïse, critically wounded. She remains hospitalized in Miami.

Florida resident arrested in Haiti assassination

More than two dozen people, mostly foreigners, have been accused of playing a role in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise last week. Now, authorities have arrested a Haitian-born Florida resident who they say acted as a middleman between the alleged assassins and the unnamed masterminds.

The man, identified as 63-year-old Christian Emmanuel Sanon, was accompanied by several of the suspected assailants when he allegedly flew to the Caribbean island nation on a private jet in early June, according to Leon Charles, head of the Haitian National Police. Sanon had allegedly hired the Colombian nationals through a Florida-based Venezuelan security firm to protect him and his business. But they later received a new mission: arrest the president of Haiti, according to Charles.

"The operation started from there," the police chief said during a press conference Sunday, adding that several more men joined the group before they stormed Moise's home in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, at around 1 a.m. local time on July 7.

The 53-year-old head of state was shot and killed while his wife, Martine Moise, was wounded. She has since been transferred to a Florida hospital for treatment and underwent surgery on Saturday, according to Haitian interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph.

The American suspected of masterminding the Haitian assassination planned to steal the presidency and hire the hitmen as official bodyguards, police say

The American man suspected of hatching the plot to assassinate Haiti's leader wanted to steal the presidency for himself and hire the killers as his bodyguards, police have said.

President Jovenel Moïse was shot dead in the bedroom of his Port-au-Prince home on July 7. The Haitian police said 28 people carried out the attack and, as of Monday, 21 people have been arrested in connection to it, Reuters reported.

On Sunday, Léon Charles, the country's police chief, announced that they had arrested a man believed to be one of the masterminds of the operation, the Associated Press reported.

Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a 63-year-old Haitian-born American who worked as a doctor in Florida, flew to Haiti in early June on a private jet with "political objectives," Charles said.

One of the final tweets by the suspected mastermind of the Haitian president's assassination called for a 'transitional government'

The last worded tweet posted by the suspected mastermind of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse called for a "transitional government" in the Caribbean country.

Haiti authorities announced Sunday that they had arrested Christian Sanon, a 63-year-old Haitian doctor and resident of Florida.

According to Léon Charles, the country's police chief, Sanon and several of the alleged assassins flew to Haiti on a private jet in early June with "political objectives," Charles said, according to The Washington Post.

Around that time, on June 7, Sanon tweeted his solution for an end to Moïse's rule. His Twitter account, Haiti Lives Matter, has been deleted but an archived copy of the page was located by Insider.
