NEW: The officer who shot Ashli Babbitt at the Capitol on 1/6 was not a part of a specific security detail to a member of Congress, a senior law enforcement official tells NBC News.

This refutes the assertions made by former President Trump in a televised interview yesterday.

A senior law enforcement official briefed on the matter says the officer who shot Ashli Babbitt was not a member of a security detail provided to a specific member of Congress and says the officer has not yet returned to duty.

part of Mike Pence's security. I guess they won't stop until he's identified so Trumpers can make death threats against him like they do with Fauci and others. Trump should have to pay for ruining the guy's life.

Thank goodness there was someone who knew what to do when a crazed lunatic with a backpack tries to get through a broken window of a barricaded door and toward members of Congress.

The officer showed great restraint by not taking out more of the enemy.

weapon. He possibly saved a couple insurrectionists lives by not doing so. Someone could have ben trampled to death. Had he opened fire he would have stopped them for sure and really caused a stampede. There would have been no more justified shooting ever as far as I'm concerned.

He's a hero. I don't give a damn what detail he was or wasn't assigned to. They better keep his identity protected. Fox News wants to get him murdered.

needs to shut up.

Hopefully this officer and his family will be treated like someone in the witness protection program until the RW lies and rhetoric and fury dies down over this matter, if ever. Get them to a safe place.

7. Ashli Babbitt was part of an insurrection with people armed with assorted weapons.

They attacked the police, broke down barriers, and in some cases, threw the barriers at the police and used them against the police (bike racks used as barriers were used to attack police - thrown at as well as pushed against to shove the police back).

They broke windows, broke the glass panes out of doors, forcing their way into the Capitol from different sides. They destroyed property, attacked the police with bear spray, various poles - both wood and metal, hockey sticks, fire extinguishers, their fist, various other sprays, baseball bats and more - all weapons they brought with them for the sole purpose of using them to gain entry into the Capitol and go after Congress and the Vice President.

They built a gallows.

They shouted treason - meaning that both Congress and the VP were committing treason.

They voiced that Pelosi must die. That Pence must die.

At the Speaker's Lobby, a short, straight walk to the House of Representatives, within view of the chamber, an outer barrier was erected - a line was drawn. Armed police, guns drawn, stood as defenders for members of the House of Representatives.

The insurrectionists knew the police behind that barrier had his gun drawn. They saw the gun. They shouted it out to others.

They broke the glass door panes anyway. Ashli Babbitt climbed up and through that broken glass - attempting to cross that line of defense anyway.

She got shot. She died.

She died trying to cross a line of defense, with an armed police officer standing there, protecting the House of Representatives.

You don't get to attack elected officials and get away with it. You don't even get to attempt it and get away with it.

No, your "cause" will never ever be considered "just" when it comes to attacking elected officials. Not even the elected officials who encouraged you. It simply doesn't work that way.

You're not a freedom fighter when you are attacking the very democracy you claim to be defending.

You are the worst a nation could possibly produce. You and those in office who encouraged you are the very worst.

Ashli Babbitt was no hero. She was a traitor and she died a traitor's death.

Yeah, it was tragic. But only because of the conditions Trump and his ilk created that Babbitt and others embraced, so much so they turned on their own country and engaged in insurrection.

That was the tragic part.

That one of insurrectionists was killed by someone defending the lives of those in Congress was to be expected.

I know I wondered when it was going to happen as I watched the events unfold that day.

I knew it was coming.

That only one was killed by police is the only surprising part.
