Surfside officials closing kosher bistro serving 3,000 meals daily to first responders and victims' families

Surf-n-Sides, a small bistro which has been serving about 3,000 meals per day to first responders, survivors and family members of the Champlain Towers South tragedy, is being forced by the city to close, reported owner Eli Ginsburg on Sunday.

Ginsburg said the town gave him written notice at 4 p.m. on Friday that he must cease all operations by 5 p.m. on Monday.

“The town doesn’t want it to feel like anything ever happened except on that block,” Ginsburg said of what he believes is Surfside’s attempt to “return to normalcy.”

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said that while he was not involved in the Town Manager’s decision to shut the operation down, he supports the decision because it is based on officials’ concerns about the safety of workers and patrons at the establishment.

“I was told they have significant safety concerns,” Burkett said, explaining that the town was concerned about the propane tanks, carbon monoxide coming from generators and electrical cords “strung all over the place.”

Yeah, that is over the top. there must be dozens of generators and all kinds of power cords to portable lighting there. Why shutdown just one?

CO outdoors is just not a thing.

Sorry, this is like not allowing people to give water bottles to voters standing in hot weather for hours.

on how "outdoors" and how close people are situated to the generators. Aren't they operating a tent like structure? And what about the propane tanks (there are regs governing their use) and electrical cable lying around?

The OP implied this was being down out of stupidity or mean spiritedness but I don't see that from the info available. Why would they shut it down w/o good reasons?

I'm sure the neighbors in the other buildings are calling them daily about all the disruption. They want the operation shut down quickly. It's killing property values. Yes, that is how people act.

It'll be years before those units can command what they did before the collapse, if ever.

These are the same town officials that allowed this building to get to the point where it collapsed. Probably republicons. i am glad I live in deep blue Massachusetts. My grandparents are buried in Florida (retired to Florida from Brooklyn) but I would never live in Florida.

There's another food area three blocks away that they offered to help him move to, but he declined.

What he did for his community was admirable; and in flexing to let him operate during the height of the emergency, sounds like the town did well also. I hope he moves or closes with a grace and dignity that doesn't damage the good feelings to this point. The media have plenty of blood elsewhere to report on.

A “small bistro serving 3,000 meals a day” getting shut down for safety reasons? Sounds like the same kind of whiney people who squawked they only had 15 minutes to get their belongings before the second tower was to come down. Those in the collapsed building never got a notice. After saying this, I’ll see if the reasonings change.

Even if the intentions are good.

You wan't me to give a first responder a tuna salad sandwich that has only been sitting in the sun 3 hours?

I just want to help.
