It isnt often that we see a New York Times paragraph so freighted with syrup and honeyed goo, but there it was on Sunday afternoon, like something youd order at IHOP to beat back a hangover: Soaring more than 50 miles into the hot, glaringly bright skies above New Mexico, Richard Branson at last fulfilled a dream that took decades to realize: He can now call himself an astronaut.
Better lede: Fulfilling his desire to beat a fellow billionaire into the lowest verge of space, notorious tax cheat Richard Branson burned some of the money he owes his home country in order to fling himself past the troposphere so he could experience weightlessness for as much time as it takes to make a decent bowel movement. An achievement that will go down in corporate history, Branson now holds bragging rights over the guy whose monopolies are eating the economy alive.
Space travel used to be about us, a collective effort by the country to reach beyond previously unreachable limits. That was the Cold War propaganda, anyway, and it had an unavoidable allure. Now, its about them, the 0.1 percent who hide their fortunes and use those revenues to give their egos a televised tongue-bath in zero-g, followed by a gala event suffused with celebrities. Space exploration is now a plaything for those who already exist in an alien atmosphere. Im pretty sure Chuck Yeager would not be impressed.

(25,816 posts)either business or personal, but you don't return to the same place you took off from.
Back when rich businessmen invested in commercial airplanes, they paid much higher
taxes than they do today. I believe Bezos, perhaps the richest of all, paid no taxes, not
even as much as a waitress.

(25,816 posts)Doesn't the cruise ship stop at various ports? Or does it just sail out a few miles, turn circles and then
come home? Driving, cruising or flying, you have a destination. Heck, your trip might even take a week
or two. Quite a bit different from a short flight to the sky and returning back to the same place.
To me anyway.

(94,503 posts)Suppose you went on a whale watching cruise? Out and back the same day?
Captain Stern
(2,201 posts)On a discount Cruise to Nowhere, the ship is the destination. You won't visit any ports, but rather have two to three days to relax, unplug, and explore all the bells and whistles the ship has to offer.

(19,195 posts)he did use all of NASA'S trail blazing technology. So I guess when you duplicate something NASA did 60 years ago...... everyone is supposed to treat you like some kind of hero, and make a big fuss over it?
brooklynite
(94,503 posts)And who is treating him like a hero? He's developing a new business and proving that it's successful.

(19,195 posts)Defending his wonderful "business", that only other wealthy people will be able to afford. Oh, that's right......he did say they were going to donate two tickets so some lucky individuals could be "astronauts", just like him. Two people out of the 7.9 billion currently inhabiting our planet. What a mensch.
And if you don't recognize that NASA did all the original calculations and materials certification for every aspect of space travel, well......... I don't have anything else to say. Branson's 50.2 mile "exploration of space" is like having a layover at LAX and saying you've been to Los Angeles.
But you keep defending "astronaut" Richard Branson, the amazing businessman. I imagine you have your ticket already booked, right? What's $250,000 for a chance to see the curvature of the earth?
brooklynite
(94,503 posts)Do I defend Branson? Yes, based on what he's accomplished with his other businesses (Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Rail, Virgin Blue, Virgin Records), and what he's been able to do in the FIRST launch for Virgin Galactic. It suggests a more promising future than using a computer or mobile phone (created by Billionaires, and initially used by wealthy people who could afford them) to post knee-jerk rants about income envy.

As I bet you are aware Branson pledged 3 billion for climate change and has not come up with the money. His airline has increased it's emissions.
He is using US infrastructure and pays no taxes. He avoids taxes here and in the UK by living on an island.
I cannot really judge Branson without more research which I don't feel like doing. However climate change is the biggest problem facing the world. Don't tease us.

(4,448 posts)0.1% would be 350,000 astronauts. We would be on the verge of it becoming accessible for everyone. Most of us would know at least 1 astronaut or at least be an acquaintance
If we had 0.1% going into space, we would have a space launch about every 24 business hours.
