i live in San Diego. My roommate is a health worker at Kaiser. She has a colleague whose in-laws are right wingers who live in San Diego County. They are both anti-vaccers. They both got covid. The FIL has it bad and the MIL is still asymptomatic but has severe asthma so I guess its just a matter of time for her. The co-worker is pregnant and has a one year old son. Her husband has been vaccinated, but she and her son could not. The son now has covid after visiting his grandparents. So far she is okay. But imagine being pregnant and having to take care of a covid infected infant. The baby then infected her father who has been vaccinated but still got Covid, though thankfully a mild case. Her mother shows no symptoms. The in laws own a restaurant in San Diego. Who knows how many workers and customers they have infected.
Now another story about the crazy right wingers. My cousin is a Trump supporter, climate change denier, covid denier, anti-vaccer. She keeps sending me, and I'm sure everyone in her family, propaganda about how dangerous the covid vaccines are. She called yesterday to let me know that both her granddaughter and her boyfriend have covid, as well as his entire family. No one in her family is vaccinated. Her husband and ex-husband both have health problems. She doesn't believe in the Delta Variant, or in vaccines, or the death numbers because of course they have all been faked, or in the dangers of Covid. Very stupid woman. She told me that thousands and thousands of people have died from getting the vaccine. She told me that it would come out shortly how right she is and how wrong me and everyone who thinks like me are. God she's Effing stupid.

(13,856 posts)A hospital doctor told me about one woman who ended up signing a Do Not Resuscitate order because they wouldn't promise not to use the shock paddles on her in case her heart went into fibrillation during surgery.
She was convinced that the shock paddles were a ploy to kill sick people so Obamacare would not have to pay for sick patients.
So, yes, you can die of stupidity.

Too many crowds and tourists.
Wasn't too bad before July 4th weekend; the county was pretty stable. I spoke a bit too late.

(2,235 posts)have the vaccine and have no plans to get it. Quite a few have gotten Covid because they continued to expose themselves at church, funerals, etc., and two who are younger still have lingering issues with their sense of taste, even over a year after. It makes me wonder if there are other long term effects to worry about with them, like did it affect their heart or pulmonary systems in a way that's lurking beneath the surface. One relative who thinks exactly like your cousin and has several mitigating health factors got it and didn't even go to the hospital and now she's more sure than ever...
I have existential despair.

(11,191 posts)Gonna show me how right you are? Thatll be the day.
All I could think of in the first story is that the colleague allowed her child to spend time with non vaccinated grandparents while she was pregnant. Unless she literally had no choice because they were her childs day care and she could not afford an alternative.
I do, unfortunately, understand what its like to have trumpidiot relatives. My dad and his wife are in assisted living in Florida. Both are vaccinated. He is an evangelical whose hero is Reagan, though Im sure he voted slightly reluctantly though none the less for TFG. My brother is a college educated hypocritical evangelical idiot. My dad mentioned last night that my brother still has not been vaccinated and he couldnt understand why not. I told him its because faux news fucker tucker told him its a hoax and vaccines are bad. I then suggested he tell my brother he could t visit them until he was fully vaccinated (though he rarely makes the 4 hour drive to visit). I was pleasantly surprised when my dad said he already told him he couldnt come inside u til he was vaccinated. Then he told me my brothers daughter recently recovered from covid.

(612 posts)I believe vaccinations are recommended for pregnant woman. Her co-worker should check with her M.D. but I have heard on the news several times that the covid vaccine is safe and recommended for pregnant women.
mRNA vaccines don't have any live virus in them at all. They work by tricking cells into producing spike proteins which are then expressed on the surface of the cells. Our body's immune system detects this, and starts producing antibodies for the spike proteins.
However the cells themselves get rid of the mRNA and return to being completely healthy. It's just that our body's immune system is primed to kill anything bearing a spike protein on it.
In other words, the vaccines are completely harmless.

(25,746 posts)She should go ahead and do it.
As for your cousin, ask her to prove that "thousands and thousands of people have died from getting the vaccine." She can't, of course. But do encourage her not to seek medical help while she is sick. Maybe you can get her to make a will and have you as her sole heir.

(22,644 posts)Depending on past and present exposure to lead, it's a fact that her brain just won't work normally.
Due to human exposure to airborne tetraethyl-lead, from leaded gasoline that is also in our food supply, our bodies will substitute lead when our diets are deficient in calcium and other minerals. The result is that our IQs are about 14 points lower than they would be otherwise. And a dumber human doesn't always make the right choices.
People that are around firearms or gun ranges are considered at higher risk too due to the lead aerosols emitted during firearm discharge. Civil aviation private pilots and their passengers are too, since AVGAS contains high levels of tetraethyl-lead and is still used today. Elevated blood lead concentrations take a detrimental toll on our internal organs, but also can change otherwise normal human behavior into that of someone who is aggressive and violent.

(35,423 posts)I can recall a moment decades ago when all of a sudden I seemed to be encountering stupidity everywhere I looked. One could ask a question of a stranger (such as about directions) and nobody knew anything.
I said to myself that surely this is a fluke.
But no, it wasnt. I continued with my observations. I would ask questions of clerks in stores. Nobody knew nuttin. I gradually got used to it and devised other means for answering questions.
It occurred to me a long time ago that this might be an explanation. I hadnt thought about this in years.
I remember back then that at a certain point this stupidity and ineptitude would affect our leadership. And sure enoughtonight it is being revealed that neither trump OR pence knew the difference between the National Guard and the Army. Think of the disaster that would have been (June 6).

(22,644 posts)D-Lead Hand Soap quickly and efficiently removes heavy metal dusts, lead and contaminants from the skin and hands.
Unfortunately, while this product can cleans away lead on your skin, your clothes and your lungs and the resulting increase in blood lead levels won't be so easy.

(2,267 posts)According the this article, it was supposed to have been phased out by 2018 (article dates from 2013).
Note for those who aren't familiar with the term: AVGAS is not the same as what's used in commercial airplanes. AVGAS is only used in small, piston engine aircraft. Commercial aircraft use jet fuel.
According to Wikipedia, AVGAS is the most common piston engine fuel for small aircraft in Europe also, but because it's insanely expensive, efforts are underway to convert to diesel, which is cheaper, more readily available and allegedly has advantages for aviation use.

(1,390 posts)One's pregnant. One neighbor's a total RW nutjob/traitor, the pregnant one is a "I'm not into politics" idiot. They're both ticking time bombs regardless of their excuses or brainwashing or flat out stupidity. I've tried talking to both but gave up long ago and stay far, far away from them physically.
In my opinion they're traitors to all of humanity by allowing a deadly virus to not only spread but likely mutate and become stronger as well.

(202,970 posts)Here in New York, everything was closed down last summer - except for drive-thrus and take out. There is one extremely popular seasonal ice cream place that tried opening - no inside eating, just standing outside and going up to windows - but they had a Covid case there and so they shut down and didn't open again for the rest of the season.

I told the friend who sent it to me, "are you kidding? Why would I want to do that? Now, when I want to take a nap but I don't want to get in bed all I do is rest on the refrigerator, the magnets keep me in place, why would I want to give that benefit up?", then I took a picture of myself sleeping while resting on the refrigerator...she has good humor, so she laughed.
