Electrify America to double EV charging stations by 2025

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Electrify America, an electric vehicle charging network funded with money paid by Volkswagen as punishment for its emissions cheating scandal, says it plans to more than double its number of charging stations throughout the United States and Canada.

The expansion will include 1,800 fast-charging stations and 10,000 individual chargers to be installed by 2025 and is part of Electrify America’s previous commitment to invest $2 billion over 10 years on EV infrastructure, education and access in the U.S.

Automakers have ramped up production of electric vehicles that can go farther and charge faster, but are concerned that consumers interested in EVs may wait to buy until there’s better, faster charging infrastructure.

The latest generation of EVs, many with ranges around 300 miles (480 kilometers) per charge, can accept electricity at a much faster rate than previous models could, but most charging stations can’t keep up with the vehicles’ advanced technology.

Cause electricity to be out for two weeks. Hurricanes especially causes this.

... Governor Perry told Houston to evacuate from Houston and trapped 10s of thousands on I-10 as the traffic cause people to run out of gas and choke the highway.

Flooding will fill underground gas storage at gas stations, and they won't be very useful even if the power doesn't fail.

3. These charging stations will go unused when range is increased

I constantly talk to people who are against EVs because range is only 150-200 miles, but if you ask them how often they travel further than that they often can't answer more than once or twice per year. People will be charging their cars in their garages every night and will rarely need public charging stations, even for moderately long distances. And within several years we're going to have 300-500 mile ranges on most EVs. How often do people really drive longer than 300 miles round trip per year? For most people it's once or twice, so you're going to need a charging station once or twice a year.

There won't need to be as many charging stations as there are gas stations, that's a misconception. There will be a bigger need for destination charging stations, store or park parking lots, hotel parking, etc.

It's an exciting time, because we as the consumers are about to get a much much better product for a vehicle, EVs are going to be better than ICEs in just about every way imaginable. Better made and more reliable, better ride, faster, safer, more stable, better handling, cheaper, and more affordable to own. And it's also coming at a time when technology was already being integrated into cars at an amazing clip. Smart technology built into cars to avoid collisions and break when a hazard appears etc. You even have cars parallel parking themselves. The next 15 years are going to be amazing.

Everyone who owns an EV will have a charging station in their garage, or at their parking spot at their apartment. Electricity goes everywhere right now, every place is wired.

Right but generally most people have one within a mile of their house and the fill up time is much shorter than a charge time at home. So I guess my thought is that people drive on by gas stations when they don’t need them just like they will charging stations.

9. People use gas stations 30-50 times a year

EV owners will use public charging stations perhaps once or twice a year. They'll only be on the interstates or at highway rest stops.
If every current car owner had a gas pump in their garage or next to their parking space, there would be no neighborhood gas stations. The whole country is wired for electricity already. There will simply be no reason for EV charging locations to exist in huge numbers, the same way there's no reason for public water wells to exist today in the US as everyone gets running water directly into their homes.

Many rural locations don’t even have 100 amp service yet.

Also 300 miles sounds like a long range but when you are making multiple stops (think deliveries) that three hundred miles gets ate up pretty quickly.

In a time when consumers are standoffish of buying because they don’t believe the infrastructure is there why would we want to curtail building that confidence by taking away the thing that they are looking for to shore up that confidence?
