Wyoming bar calls for murder of gay people as "cure for AIDS" and are selling it as merch

A bar in Wyoming that caters to a motorcycle crowd has become the subject of national scrutiny over the sale of homophobic t-shirts. The apparel promotes the murder of gay people as a “cure for AIDS.”

Photos of the shirts, sold at The Eagle’s Nest, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, went viral on the internet for their homophobic and violent language. The shirt in question features a man pointing a gun under the caption “In Wyoming, we have a cure for AIDS. We shoot f*ck’n f*ggots.”

The photos emerged with the LGBTQ rights organization Equality Wyoming, which first declined to name the bar out of fear of a spike in t-shirt sales. Metro Weekly also reports that the group instead called for donations to AIDS-related charities rather than protests at the location.

“We are sad to say that we failed to convince a local bar to pull these shirts from circulation. We hoped that they would choose to stop selling them when they realized the harm it did to the LGBTQ community and those living with AIDS,” Wyoming Equality said in a Facebook post. “…It is a sad day. Wyoming Equality understands that…this sucks.”

They might find some receptive audiences there.

I live in California, the so-called liberal state, and they might find some friendly spaces here too.

Hate doesn't really respect state boundaries.

People get charged with hate crimes as an addition to a primary crime. Battery for example. If a person punches someone in the face because that victim was walking out of a gay night club holding hands with their boyfriend, then the crime would be Battery and a Hate Crime would be added based on the motivation for the Battery.

As the other responders said, speech, even disgusting speech like the t-shirt, is not a crime in and of itself.

Although I suppose I shouldn’t be considering the Camp Auschwitz shirts we saw at the insurrection.

A shirt like this wouldn’t have been blinked at in the 80’s.

Bar owner Ray Bereziuk told The Cheyenne Post on Monday afternoon that his bar has stopped selling the shirts. He said that he is “in the bar business, not the apparel business,” and that he would not be reordering the shirts.

... in Germany, being the name of Hitler's hang-out for Nazi gatherings.

I've been mugged and assaulted only once on my life, and it was after I left a biker's bar in my area. I entered the place on a whim and considered leaving immediately when I saw the patrons there, but I stuck around for awhile like a dummy. Pulled out a wad of cash to pay for my beers at the bar each time too.

When I regained consciousness inside an ER, I was getting stitches above my eye and the back of my head had a huge bump like I was hit from behind with a pipe. Then the attacker(s) apparently decided to punch me in the face too, which resulted in the big black eye and the stitches.

The hospital staff gave me various expensive scans and all kinds of tests since they were convinced the back of my skull was broken and there'd be brain hemorrhaging, but they never found evidence of it. All of that happened while I was still unconscious, so the later bill shocked me!

When I later put on my clothes, still spattered with dried blood, I noticed all of the cash from my pants pocket was missing.

With no money, I decided to just walk home from the hospital that morning. It was located in a mostly-black neighborhood, and the laughter and ridicule from some of the residents there felt like extra salt in the wound. They might've assumed that I was some white boy who was beat up around there, but that's not what happened at all. I just kept walking without saying a word.

My home was about nine miles away from the hospital, but I finally got there. I took off my clothes and collapsed in my bed, still dizzy from the head trauma.

After sleeping, I called a cab to be driven to my car (still parked near the bar) despite how it was only a couple miles away. Didn't feel like walking again at that point.

Edit: Then I later learned that I was charged with "disorderly conduct" by the local police! (I only learned about that from looking online for local arrests, hoping to learn who had assaulted me.) The police were called and they found my unconscious body on the biker bar's parking lot. Then they walked inside the bar and asked what happened, and the rough-looking barmaid in there told them that I did it to myself! That was the end of their investigation, apparently! The judge later dismissed the charge after I appeared in court and showed her my black eye which still looked like the shape of a fist!

... and I even found the barmaid on the internet, since her name was included in the police report that I requested (after serendipitously learning about the bogus charge against me). I was even thinking about grilling her over what really happened to me, since I found her address on the internet too.

Never did it, thank goodness! I'm sure it would've just made matters worse for me.

In the years that followed, it turned out to be a blessing!

I have a very rare genetic condition that causes early-onset macular degeneration. Similar to age-related MD, but often first experienced when a person is in their 30's or 40's.

I was getting injections of Avastin into one of my eyes about once a month before that incident, to save the vision in my only non-blind eye, and that was the same eye that was punched!

So I had a major distortion of my eyesight from a new retinal bleed immediately after the punch too, and I made an appointment for an earlier-than-expected injection of Avastin again.

After that shot, I've never needed another one!! That was over 10 years ago!

A couple years ago, an eye doctor said it looked like I had a thin layer of scar tissue behind my retina that seemed to be sealing the tiny cracks in Bruch's membrane -- which is what caused the wet macular degeneration problems for me in the first place!

So I could ALMOST shake the hand(s) of my assaulter(s) now, whomever they are. But it wouldn't surprise me if that person or persons are currently in prison now, for something else they did in the interim.

Edit: By the way, when I appeared before the judge and told her my side of the story, there were several guys in the back of the courtroom (awaiting their trials) who erupted in laughter as soon as I mentioned the name of the biker bar.
I knew NOTHING about it before walking in there that night, but those laughing guys acted like they knew about it.

but I think this sort of rhetoric needs to be answered. In a proportional manner, of course.

Out of cheeks to turn. Never bought into that philosophy, anyway.

Maybe a t-shirt that reads "We burn down bars that sell t-shirts saying gays should be shot".

I'll be rich.
