(5,896 posts)Operation Magic Carpet brought home millions of troops from Europe and the Pacific in a very short time. Every kind of ship that could be used to carry them, was used...from aircraft carriers and battleships to cargo ships and of course, some passenger liners. The MO was, get 'em home, get 'em home fast, and get 'em demobilized. We did it very quickly.
Side note...No, I wasn't there, so not the *literal* we, the collective we as in USA.

(2,839 posts)He described it as a "cruise type ship."
This is (was) my dad, Frank Russell Owen, Jr. He was part of Intelligence and Recon Platoon, 259th Regiment of the 65th Infantry Division, 3rd Army. Oh, the stories he told me. The first time I ever asked him if he killed any Nazi's he hesitated for a moment or so and only answered, with sort of a solemn look on his face, "a few, I guess." I never asked him again about that aspect of the war. I also asked him one other time if there were any 'Oddball' types (Donald Sutherland's character in Kelly's Heroes) over there. He laughed and said, "Oh yeah! We called them the 'long hairs.' He said they were mostly from Chicago and New York City. I miss my Dad. He passed away in 2016, two months short of his 90th birthday.

(2,839 posts)He was also my football buddy. He was and I still am college football junkies (me - LSU, Geaux Tigers!). We would either watch games together or spend the majority of Saturdays on the phone talking about the games. It was so much fun! I look just like him except that my hair is about 2 feet longer! LOL

(29 posts)They filled them on the way back to Europe with "dependants" or families to be with those who stayed on. Lotta fun as a kid sailing through the North Atlantic in Winter from NYC to Bremerhaven. This is the SS Queen Elizabeth, forerunner of the modern "cruise ship".

(9,760 posts)Funny how Republicans have spawned rabid anti-communist efforts here at home (House Un-American Activities Committee, Hollywood's Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals), but you don't hear of them organizing anti-Nazi efforts here at home. And they feel free to publicly condemn anti-facists.
