According to the Innocence Project, an organization focused on exonerating wrongly convicted people, those types of interrogation methods have been shown to lead to false confessions. They've also played a role in about 30% of all wrongful convictions later overturned by DNA.

"In Illinois alone, there have been 100 wrongful convictions predicated on false confessions, including 31 involving people under 18 years of age," said Lauren Kaeseberg, legal director at the Illinois Innocence Project.
Still legal in 49 other states, and still legal to lie to adults in all 50.

(6,679 posts)They always have. We knew that. We call them when circumstances get fairly ugly or life and death and just hope against hope they don't make it worse.

(6,477 posts)They are tailor-made to induce false confessions (especially in minors and those with intellectual disabilities), and 30 years of research now mean that every US cop (should) know that. It's truly a sign of our subjugation to police demands that there isn't a major political movement to reform interrogation practices, and investigative practices more broadly.
Responsible parents in the US have to train their children to never speak to police without a parent or a lawyer, and never ever undergo a solo interview under any circumstances, even after you've grown up. "Lawyer, please." IMMEDIATELY. Never talk to police.

(18,497 posts)Who seems nice and concerned while you're waiting for your lawyer.
Cops will use EVERY dirty trick you can imagine to get you to talk.
Do not talk to ANYONE before your lawyer is present.
