Comment about minimum wage and the 30% needed for housing

I’ll be the first to agree minimum wage needs to increase. But I often see discussions about spending 30% of your income on housing. Maybe they are talking about gross wages but in my life I only consider take home pay. And even though I usually made better than average wages, I pretty much always spent more than 30% on housing, be it rent or mortgage. So there is no way in hell someone can maintain a household on minimum wage, especially in certain areas.
