(55,527 posts)I had to watch out for these. Even though my dog wore a sweater one time the red tailed coasted around for about 10 minutes. It didn't flap its wings once, just glided and glided. The friend I was with told me to get my dog since from high up it could look like any critter in a red sweater. I thought he was joking but when the hawk was still coasting after several minutes I realized he was right.
I saw one shred a smaller bird right outside of my classroom door. The 6 year old kids thought it was snowing (in CA) when they saw the poor bird's feathers floating down from the tree overhead.

That reminds of the missile launchers on Navy ships, the ship can be pitching up and down, but the missile launcher will remain perfectly still.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
