Replying to @davidfrum
The euphemistic term "vaccine hesitancy" is becoming seriously misleading. It is value-neutral, even carries a faint connotation of deliberation and thoughtfulness. But that's not what has happened with the COVID vaccines. Anti-vax feeling in the US was induced, incited.

Had the US continued to vaccinate in the summer at the same rate as in the spring, the US would be near herd immunity by now. It took a lot of work by powerful people and institutions to prevent that outcome. It didn't just *happen.* It was *done.*

Herd immunity is coming one way or the other.

(8,921 posts)They encourage their supporters to not get vaccinated and then blame it Biden.
Yeah, they are fucking evil.

(13,564 posts)or pushed the hydroxychloroquine scam. I said last spring when they were saying that, that it was a last hail Mary to be able to claim it was all overblown and the shutdowns were a mistake.
If it had all just dwindled to nothing by the end of April before vaccinations could be given the credit, they could have claimed it did what it was gonna do, and nothing could have changed anything much.

(1,910 posts)Health insurance providers want people to pay premiums and not use the services. Killing off many elderly and people with co-morbidity certainly helps their bottom lines.
You wonder if big health care insurance companies are lobbying these Repug politicians. Short term Covid costs the insurance companies a lot, long term it saves them money.

(10,269 posts)I'd be fine with an order that says unless 100% of a businesses employees have been vaxxed, that business cannot be open.
Killing themselves isnt painful enough. It's going to take the Free Market telling them to fuck off for it to get through their thick heads.

Now the story will be dead Republicans voting, no?

(1,134 posts)Was the economy. They are hoping this will negatively affect the economy and make us lose seats. If the economy completely crashes, they will point fingers at us. For them, it is OK to kill some of their base, as long as this works for them.

(32,620 posts)I mention this because my brother is not a Republican AFAIK. I don't think he cares at all for politics, and I know he doesn't watch Faux Noise. He refuses the vaccine, even though he can't give a reason why. He's got dementia and his brain isn't working properly. Those who are caring for my brother are doing a good job, and it seems they are looking out for his best interests.
So my point all along has been, "Why are you even asking him? Just give him the shots! He can't make a decision concerning his own welfare, and he doesn't understand how important it is for him to have the shots. He doesn't know the danger he's in."
Looking ahead long-term, I can see 2 possibilities. Either my brother will end up getting Covid and possibly dying. Or his dementia will progress to the point where he won't object to medications and treatments.
These Repukes are sort of in the same boat as my brother.

(44,973 posts)Republicans won't prevent herd immunity since un-vaccinated will get infected and get to the herd immunity the natural way (ones who remain alive).
Since we dropped nearly all mitigation efforts (no masks, no social distancing, everything open), herd immunity is going to come one way or the other.

(12,646 posts)For the death and failures they caused by their own greed and inability to govern.
They want to be able to day "I alone can fix this" - to their benefit, not to the country's benefit, but their's alone
America is just a brand name to them, it doesn't really matter what the country actually is as an environment or the people and other life that inhabits it. Certainly the laws and the Constitution mean less than toilet paper to them.
So, what does it matter to the GQP if a million - or 30 million - people die because of their policies? So long as they remain the winning team with all the money...
