Former President Trump released a statement on Saturday saying The Open Championship should have been played at his golf course in Scotland.
"I have spent some time watching The Open Championship (formerly known as The British Open), and it is terrific! But as almost all of the great players, sportscasters, and golf aficionados know, the greatest site and course of all for The Open is Turnberry, in Scotland," Trump said on Saturday.
"It is truly a magical place, the players want to be there .... But this course was not chosen for The Open because
they consider a wonderful person, and many-time Club Champion, Donald J. Trump, to be too controversial
this is, of course, a false reputation caused mainly by the Fake News Media," he added.
"It is a shame that the phenomenal Turnberry Golf links, the best in the World, sits empty during Open Championships, while far lesser courses are on display. Oh well, life proceeds forward!" Trump said.
The 2021 Open Championship began on July 14 and is being played at Royal St. George's Golf Club.

(38,454 posts)He most likely appointed himself that moniker. Plus he cheats on every shot.

(5,294 posts)Before Trump opens the course to the general public, he plays a round by himself, so that whatever he claims was his score is automatically the lowest score recorded for that club, hence club championship.

And he's going to sink the next shot.

First, we know, from a book, that his one big club championship was when he cheated to take victory from a 14 year old phenomenon. (Who actually shot the score he posted.)
Second, any golfer knows the greatest site & course for this event is the Old Course at St. Andrews.
Third, they didn't pull Turnberry from the rotation because he's too controversial. It's because he's a crook, and the R&A knows it.
Now, he's a traitorous seditionist and he's bad for business. Not controversial. Toxic.
And, disagreeing with a DUer above, he did NOT write "Oh well, life proceeds forward."

(10,303 posts)It has never been formerly called "The British Open".
International press call it the British Open to be able to distinguish it from other "Open" tournaments in other countries.
And as for best golf course... I believe the nice people of St. Andrews would like to have a word...

(65,010 posts)But, the use of "Tue Open Championship" over the last several years was an R&A marketing plan with their broadcast partners.
They had been trying for 3 decades to regain gravitas after the US Open overtook the British version in both prestige & a test of golf.
Then, the Masters Tournament gained prestige as Nicklaus & Woods drew attention to it and passed the Open on popularity.
I've been following golf since the late 60s, and until about 8 years ago EVERYBODY, outside of R&A members referred to it as the British Open.
It's still more common usage than the "Open Championship" despite their marketing efforts.
Technically, you're correct. Practically, it's been the British Open for many decades.

Probably plays the championship by himself so he can really focus and keep a rigid scorecard w/o distractions.
Total POS.
