They know that they must have the votes of the shrinking far right base. So, they have to avoid offending that group at all costs. In fact, they have to cater to the far right or risk being primaried. However, they also face a growing group of other Republicans who are moving quietly away from the nutcase right base and who are recognizing the cost of the right's COVID strategy and the insanity of the Trump administration.
That second, somewhat more moderate, group is not particularly vocal, but that group's votes are also essential for Republicans who are running for office. If members of that group do not vote at all or vote for Democrats in any numbers at all, the candidates are royally screwed.
That is the danger in listening to the loudest voices. Those who yell the loudest are not plentiful enough to give you a win. You need the others, as well. It's a difficult equation to solve, for sure.
It's Hobson's Choice for Republican candidates in many places. It's a choice between bad and worse, really.
I revel at their dilemma!

(146,329 posts)could be flipped or saved. Whether we will or not remains to be seen. We need candidates to win primaries who will win in November, too. That's crucial.

Nothing was scarier than watching an extra 7-8 million votes registered for Trump in 2020 v. 2016. My theory is it was the racists who normally just ignore voting
realizing they finally have a candidate to support and their vote might get their ilk into power.
We need to GOTV harder than ever.
