(18,952 posts)Those are noteworthy because they have the potential to make tsunamis, if they are big enough (five point whatever usually not). One plate pushing into the other and being driven under the other (a subduction fault), so a bunch of vertical displacement happens when the tension gives way, which when water is atop means big waves.
For the short-term safety of the locals, I hope it's not a foreshock of something more dangerous (you only ever know in hindsight).

(16,487 posts)Beautiful place, to be sure. On one of my visits they tried like crazy to get me to move there, saying they worried about me living in tornado country. I pointed to their newspaper's weather page that included a daily earthquake report and shook my head "no", noting that, unlike earthquakes, there's always a bit of warning with tornados.
