American Assn. Peds: All students should wear masks in school this fall, top pediatrics group says

The face mask guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics differ from updated school recommendations the CDC announced recently.

WASHINGTON — As the nation gears up to send children back to school in the fall, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidance Monday on how to return to the classroom safely. Among its top recommendations are potentially requiring COVID-19 vaccines and vaccine proof, and masks for anyone over the age of two, including those who are fully vaccinated.

The recommendations deviate from those of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which updated its recommendations earlier this month to say that vaccinated students and staff don't need to wear masks in school. The CDC also isn't advising schools to require shots for teachers and vaccine-eligible students.

The AAP didn't go so far as recommending requiring a vaccine, but did said that it may become necessary for school districts to do so in the future.

Snip

"Everything possible must be done to keep students in schools in-person," the recommendations stress, citing the inequalities brought to the forefront by virtual-only learning. "The benefits of in-person school outweigh the risks in almost all circumstances."

...advised parents to check with the parents of their kids' playmates. Quite often, their eyes would bug out, and they would say, "Oh my god, I never thought about that!" I would further say that if they were not sure how to bring it up, just "blame" us - say, "My pediatric office told me that I should always take a minute to discuss safety with families who have my children over to play." (Or however a parent might like to phrase it.)

To hell with the gun humpers.

I agree with the AAP on masks.

Masks will still filter the same particles they have always filtered. But the aerosolized matter will be much denser - so 90% filtration (just choosing a number out of the air) will result in a whole lot more of the particles getting through.

What I don't know is how much has to get through to cause an infection, over what time period.

What I haven't found is anything that quantifies it in a way that allows me to devise better protections against it - protections that allow me to function in the world without taking unnecessary risks.
