3. It varies by Department, but many Sheriffs and their deputies are literal brownshirts.

6. I always find sheriffs strange, but that might be because Conn. doesn't have them.

The 1960 Constitution abolished sheriffs along with all County level government.

an oversight group that can act if they refuse to perform their duty. After all, nearly every profession is answerable to someone. Sheriffs need to be TOO (and not merely the voters in the next election... too much damage can occur by then).
