1. They certainly have not read the entire Bible.

They need to read the eighth chapter of the book called I Samuel. Israel at that time had a government of representatives elected to sit on a central council. The Bible recommends this form of government. The eighth chapter of the first book of Samuel tells how the people got their heads turned by the showy ceremonies of the kingdoms around them and demanded that the prophet Samuel help them get a king set up on a throne for them. After praying about it, Samuel told them that God disapproved of this idea and warned them that a king would consume the best of everything for himself and his family, would take their sons and daughters to be menial servants, and would generally bully them. They insisted on getting a king anyway, and the Bible records that these bad results did happen as prophesied.
