CNN Interview With Capitol Rioter's Lawyer Goes Sideways

A defense attorney for one of the Capitol insurrectionists went on a wild rant on CNN Tuesday morning, comparing the federal government’s treatment of accused rioters to “Nazis” and “the Russian gulags.”

Joseph D. McBride appeared on CNN’s “New Day” to discuss Monday’s sentencing of insurrectionist Paul Hodgkins, but the interview took a dramatic turn when host John Avlon asked McBride about a LinkedIn column he wrote comparing the federal government’s treatment of accused insurrectionists to the Nazi regime.

“Like the Nazis, like the Soviets in the Gulag, innocent men and women are being held in what we are calling D.C. Guantanamo Bay,” McBride said. “Pre-trial, absent any finding of fact, they’re being held for hundreds of days in solitary confinement. They’re being beaten. They’re being starved. They’re being denied medical care, they’re being denied the right to worship. They’re being cut off from their families [and their attorneys].”

When Avlon asked whether McBride has access to his client, he acknowledged that Barnett has been released pending trial. Avlon then asked McBride why he recently went on Russian TV with his client to plead the insurrectionists’ case.

They just want to speechify, in the press and in court, and defendant be hanged if the can just get the word out.

If they had the courage of their rancid convictions they'd do it the right way --- commit the crime and give a speech in the dock at sentencing....

A long has a lot of contacts on the Hill. I see him more as a agent who gives CNN little bits he hears and the rest of the reporters can take it from there. McBride took the bait over and over. He seems to be smarter than that even though he pretty clearly supports the actions of Jan. 6th.
