Tarrant councilman Tommy Bryant uses n-word at meeting, sparking calls for resignation (Alabama)

Birmingham News

The Alabama Democratic Party is calling on Tarrant City Councilman John “Tommy” Bryant to resign after the lawmaker used the phrase “house n-----” during a council meeting Monday night, leading to widespread condemnation.

“Do we have a house n---- in here?” Bryant asked during the council meeting, which was recorded. “Do we? Do we?”

The councilman later said he was only repeating what Tarrant Mayor Wayman Newton, the city’s first Black mayor, called City Councilwoman Veronica Freeman.

In an interview Tuesday night with WVTM, Bryant said there was a difference between his use of the n-word and Newton’s alleged use of it.

“He said it in a derogatory manner, I said it so people would know what the mayor said,” Bryant said. “The mayor was being derogatory toward Veronica Freeman when he said that.”

I mean, that seems kind of relevant to the point.

Not fond of the phrase in general. No minority group is a monolith. It'd be ridiculous to say so. But if a member of that group strays from a narrow band of "acceptable" thought, they get called these epithets. I mean, I thought not a monolith. So why this attempt to enforce one?

The gay community tried to co-opt some of the terminology. We started calling people an Aunt Patty if they strayed from the political orthodoxy.

Not fond of that one, either. "Think exactly like us, or else." I mean, in a supposed liberal group of people, ew. We're supposed to be about diversity of ideas and representation. Conformity really needs to not be our bag.

"Tarrant Mayor Wayman Newton today denied allegations that he used the racially derogatory term referring to a house servant during slavery.
. . .
He said all his meetings with the council members have been recorded, and that if he used derogatory language, they should be able to present the recording.

“I never used that phrase to speak about her,” Newton said. “Ask them to produce the video. They record everything. They should have their own recording. They want me out. He (Bryant) wants to run for mayor.”
