Traumatic content such as hate speech, porn and brutal violence are just some of the topics this Facebook content moderator was faced with on a daily basis.

(201 posts)It was horrifying and some of the things he described he watched were unreal. Just his descriptions bothered (and stuck with) me, and I hadn't even seen the clips. I could never do a job like this.
I know the REAL fake political news on fb is a big problem, but this is also. There are a hell of a lot of truly sick people posting shit that need to be stopped.

(18,968 posts)A friend used to be a local prosecutor and he specialized in prosecuting crimes against children. He knew a guy in law enforcement whose job it was to watch and catalog the child porn they confiscated and try to ID the victims in it. That guy killed himself in his early 40s.
You can only see so much of the worst things and not be damaged.

(7,911 posts)...It quoted the headline of an article: "Is There Life on Mars?" and the reason for it being deleted was that it was NOT proof that there is life on Mars. I never claimed that it was. It asked a legitimate question, and the article concluded with "probably not", and was a very rational, level-headed article. Yet posting a link to that article was considered objectionable for a "reason" that had no relationship to the reality of the post.
Some moderator was just in a cranky mood that morning.

(20,817 posts)I've gotten to the point of just dropping kids picture and hitting like buttons. Any other activity is subject to the whim of a cranky moderator.

There are so many horrible things happening in this world that we have to protect ourselves from it. I've often said that no single person can save the world. All we can do is protect our own little corner of it.
Damn! I thought I had some shitty jobs in my time.

(100,029 posts)It's a terrible job but somebody has to do it. I could probably write a book with some of the crazy stuff I've seen on the internet.

(38,301 posts)I'm a bit misanthropic.
Court ordered public castrations with rusty serrated knives ought to be a YouTube channel.
Alas there would be people who got off on that.

(10,156 posts)While it does have positives, it has way more negatives. It gives a platform to inhuman individuals.

(3,212 posts)but I moderate a fetish forum, yeah - an old fashioned forum like this one (HA!), and nowadays we only get spam.
Nothing as bad as what this person is describing.
We used to get more trolls, but I they are mostly either banned, muted, or just bored and gone. And they never were really that bad. It was very rare to see any kind of sick picture or link. Mostly it was comments that pissed people off. Like one of my favorite artists called me a f*cking c*nt for some reason, and I really liked his work too. He was probably the worst troll there besides the former owner. Ha
Oh, and politics. Yeah, being a fetish forum it leans left, and we actually had some good debates in the Flame section.
Oh well. Nothing like the FB mod here.
