Steny Hoyer went off on House Republicans today. After pointing out that he saw some of them looking pretty scared while hiding on Jan 6, he says, What was this insurrection about?... It was treason, based on a lie!

(3,401 posts)These people are the most agitated pro-gun rights people in the country, they had to have been warned and then they improvised with bear spray, stun guns, brass knuckles and bully clubs. Some left guns in their vehicles and hotel rooms.
Someone was wise enough to know that this would have been a massacre with great death on both sides if guns were carried by rioters. So who organized this? What was their goal?

(867 posts)The last time gun humpers tried protesting with their guns in the Nation's Capitol they were promptly arrested as the dumb people they were.

They were instructed not to by powerful leaders.

(17,902 posts)Not terribly different than this motley crew. Unfortunately for Germany, this merry band of nutters learned from their mistakes and did better the next time. Then again, opposition in Weimar Germany was hopelessly fractured. Not so much in the US. We should be on our guard, certainly, always, but history isn't repeating, it's just rhyming.

(1,730 posts)Yes, I realize one person was killed by direct action of law enforcement.
I admire the restraint used.
I can't say I would have done the same thing. Whether I was in charge or on the front line.
The image of blood running down the steps of the Capital would have been a gift to our enemies.
But I'm not sure which is worse. Half the country seems to be pretending it never happened.
That seems awfully dangerous.

(3,401 posts)If police would have used their guns and the rioters had no guns, the rioters would be viewed as the victims. For them to do nothing and Congress members injured or killed, it would be the fault of the weak Capitol police as well as the rioters.
The restraint that was taken is somehow the best solution.

(658 posts)Only when there was a direct breach was force used. I was proud of my American protectors on that day. Shamed by my fellow Americans, but the capitol police really showed us all how to correctly handle a very bad situation. I wish that the training that they receive could be broadcast to the rest of law enforcement throughout the country.
I'm waiting on the hearings to see what they'll bring to light.
