Speaker Nancy Pelosi and fellow House Democrats on Thursday defended her unprecedented move to reject GOP appointments to a panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, while Republicans warned that the move would prompt retaliation and send Congress further down a partisan spiral.
Pelosis decision this week to sideline Reps. Jim Banks (Ind.) and Jim Jordan (Ohio) both ardent defenders of former president Donald Trump prompted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) to lash out at Pelosi and withdraw all five of his designees from the investigative committee.
But Pelosis move won strong backing from House Democrats, many of whom remain disturbed and angry about the violent incursion of Trump supporters into the Capitol. The upheaval of congressional norms, several said Thursday, was outweighed by the risk of giving Republicans an official platform to distort, minimize and deflect a focused inquiry into the causes of the riot.
This was an assault on the fabric of, the hallmark of our democracy, which is the transfer of power, and the fact that they arent treating it seriously really, really is upsetting to me and a lot of members, said Rep. Pete Aguilar (Calif.), one of the Democrats serving on the panel. We want people who are going to have allegiance to the oath of office that they took, not an allegiance to one person. And theyve clearly pledged their allegiance to the former president.

(2,146 posts)and they are doing everything they can to avoid the consequences. They tried to overthrow the government with force. In some countries, they would have, by now, been all hanged, but here, with them media supporting them, they have gotten away with it, so far. They have betrayed their oath of office, and democracy itself. Quit trying to be polite about it, quit trying to find words of moderation, quit letting them continue to lie about it. Try them and jail them.

(81,238 posts)Or - let's just say, if WE'D been the ones tearing up the joint on January 6th because WE didn't get OUR way in the last election, what do you think the GOP would have done about it? They wouldn't be okay with us getting any breaks or avoiding any consequences.

(37,159 posts)They had a chance for an equal voice, and voted against it.
Once they found out an investigation was happening anyway, and they could still participate, under the same rules as the Benghazi hearings which let the Speaker veto picks from the minority, they still proposed two who would turn the hearings into a circus (and are potential subjects of the investigations).
And now act aggrieved that those two were vetoed, so they're yanking all the Minority Leader's picks.
Nothing matters to them except what will show up on FOX, Newsmax, OANN, out of the mouths of radio ranters, and all the echos of them put up on Facebook.

(111,089 posts)...if he chooses to not appoint anyone, she will then appoint two or three more Republicans on her own, in order to make it as bi-partisan as possible.
Trump and the McCarthy Republicans will continue to bellow and whine.

(629 posts)I am glad Pelosi did what she did. About time the Dems started flexing a little. I still get frustrated over the empty threat the Dems made about the Repubs pushing through the last Supreme Court Justice. All I heard was "they'll be sorry if they do." But there was no repercussion. The Dems should be pushing through stuff and say "We warned you, but you didn't listen. We told you there would be consequences, and here they are."
