Green Bay Packers is referring to canned meat packers.

Back in the early 1900s, there was a company called the Indian Packing Company. The canned meat company was founded in Delaware, but in 1921, it was taken over by Acme Packing Company out of Illinois.

The new company had a facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Acme Packing Company sadly closed in 1943 after World War II, and they never reopened.

That said, it passed along its name to the Green Bay Packers.

As a vegetarian, I am grossed out. As a Packers fan, I try not to think about it.

You get grossed out because a football team is named after a former meat packing company?

But they don't butcher animals at a supermarket, and there is no reason for me to walk past meat.

But I don't think they are butchering animals at a football stadium either. I'm surprised that the name disgusts you but you didn't say anything about the leather ball.

Notice Bart Starr (#15) on the left, second row from the back. As a player, he was one of my childhood heroes.

Not surprising. Players didn’t tend to fuck around with Vince Lombardi, unless they wanted a quick ticket to Washington or Pittsburgh, or some other 1960s NFL Siberia. Lombardi traded All Pro center Jim Ringo to Philadelphia because he had the temerity to try to use an agent to negotiate his contract.

Willie Davis and Willie Wood are in the picture, and Herb Adderley isn’t. The Packers traded for Davis and signed Wood as a free agent in 1960. They drafted Adderley before the 1961 season.

There are 10 of the 13 Lombardi era Hall of Famers in the photo: Forrest Gregg, Ray Nitschke, Willie Davis, Paul Hornung, Bart Starr, Jim Ringo, Henry Jordan, Jerry Kramer, Jim Taylor and Willie Wood.

Dave Robinson and Herb Adderley weren’t on the team yet, and Coach Lombardi isn’t in the picture. Hall of Famer Emlen Tunnell is in the photo, but he is really a New York Giant Hall of Famer.

We had been Eagles fans, but with the Packers, it was love at first sight!

Many of the players lived in and around where we did, and it was common to run into them. Several players owned a bar in the little town next to ours, and the team seemed like a hometown team!

Love the Pack!
