During the depression era, a cousin of my mother's played baseball for the Cleveland Indians.

He would send her and her siblings his used knee-high wool socks that were part of his uniform, and they wore them to keep warm while walking to school in the rural countryside.

I relay this personal interest story because of today's headline that the Cleveland Indians are being renamed as the Guardians.....

required the players to wear their stirrups with small openings near the shoe top, unlike the trend at the time on most teams to wear 6 inch cut outs in the stirrups. The socks were also made of wool, rather than the lighter, stretchy material worn by other teams.

The players hated it. Johnny Bench called them “ankle chokers,” but admitted they were useful for keeping his legs warm while duck hunting.
