https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/SF-Bay-Area-restaurants-customers-rude-Yelp-review-16333535.phpAt Vanessas Bistro in Berkeley, owner Vi Nguyen recently encountered a customer who stood in her kitchen doorway to yell at her after a server made a simple mistake.
Not talk, yell, Nguyen emphasized, sounding increasingly exasperated as she told the story. This was the beginning of the reopening, and we had a line of takeout orders. Her husband stood at the doorway and was like, She's hungry! She needs her food right now!
This wasnt an isolated incident for Nguyen. Since Californias June 15 reopening of the economy, customers have gotten a little difficult. Well, a lot difficult.
Nguyen said its gotten so bad, shes even had to 86 some regulars (restaurant slang for banning or throwing out a customer).

(16,834 posts)I worked in the service industry for 20 years, and I saw people do some nasty shit to the food and drinks of customers who chose to be assholes. When workers get treated like shit by customers and their bosses don't back them up, they sometimes lash out.

(2,041 posts)I worked as a server in college. It was the most difficult job Ive ever had.
Plus we were taught as kids that it was good manners to be kind to those who serve you.

(63,221 posts)A minimum of 20%, if not more. Since Covid restrictions have been easing, I have only been going out to restaurants in my neighborhood and it seems as though both staff and customers have been very friendly, but they have mostly been places with a loyal, local clientele, so I wouldn't expect that too many people would act up.
However, this is a bit of a tourist neighborhood, so I am sure the get the occasional Kens and Karens in there from time to time. I just think it's terrible to treat people this way when they have been through such a hard time over the past year and a half. When are people going to give them a break and realize that they are struggling too!

I really want my favorite places to still be around!
I do intervene if I see a Karen - for example, when one was being rude to a cashier (near Christmas) I asked her loudly, SO, ARE YOU ALWAYS A BITCH OR JUST AROUND THE HOLIDAYS? "WELL I NEVER!" she exclaimed. MAYBE THAT'S THE *REASON*! i shot back. She stomped off and the cashier said to me, YOU'RE MY HERO!

(9,037 posts)They should just put the word "entitled" in the city's flag and be done with it.
The days of hippies past are long, long gone. It's a bunch of affluent, way over-entitled people who treat anyone perceived as lesser like total shit. Developers kicked out tons of great, long-established places. It went full Boomers With Money. You'd think the University being there would ameliorate things a bit, but students are too busy shacking up five to an apartment, because it's all they can afford.
I do enjoy the city council though. Mostly for humor value. Developers get all the money while they worry about social causes. Those social causes do not include the horde of homeless and mentally ill wandering around or the crime on the south side where it's mostly poorer minorities. No no. I meant things like, you know, soda taxes. Seriously, they're hilarious. I love reading about them.
I used to eat lunch sometimes at the Whole Foods on Ashby and Telegraph just to watch the entitled melt down from time to time. Great fun. Plus the pizza was ok.
Source - worked in Berkeley for ten years up until somewhat recently.

I just never treat anybody badly. Life is so much easier that way.
