So this guy is now claming he has mental problems?

Fuck him. Lock him up anyway.

Exclusive: 'QAnon Shaman' in plea negotiations after mental health diagnosis

WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - The participant in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riots nicknamed the "QAnon Shaman" is negotiating a possible plea deal with prosecutors, after prison psychologists found he suffers from a variety of mental illnesses, his attorney said.

In an interview, defense lawyer Albert Watkins said that officials at the federal Bureau of Prisons, or BOP, have diagnosed his client Jacob Chansley with transient schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.

snip

Chansley is one of the most recognizable of the hundreds of Donald Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol after the then-president in a fiery speech falsely claimed that his November election defeat was the result of fraud.

Chansley, of Arizona, was photographed inside the Capitol wearing a horned headdress, shirtless and heavily tattooed. He is a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory that casts Trump as a savior figure and elite Democrats as a cabal of Satanist pedophiles and cannibals.

The paramilitary "forces" were truly after murdering members of Congress and Pence. They weren't joking. People like the shaman were convenient distractions, as circus acts. We should not be fooled. There were fascist traitors who lead the break-in of the Capitol Building, and they acted at Trump's command. Distractions won't alter that truth.

The lawyer knows his client is in a tough legal spot, and so is trying the case in the press.

It's like Bill Barr. Come out ahead of the facts, make a splashy claim, let it simmer, then when the real story comes out months later the early story is already baked into people's minds.

Maybe he is insane. But I will wait for an official "second opinion" released from someone other than his lawyer.

The real danger that existed during the 1/6 insurrection wasn't with the guy in the bull horns. It was with the armored forces who led the break-in and hunted for Congress people, and the Vice President, to kill. The others were responsible for breaking and entering, and to disrupt the business of the country, but they were not the tip of the spear. Trump led the insurrection. He was trying to hand on to the presidency with every tool he could muster. He used the Proud Boys and the other groups to act as his insurgent army. Whether the DOJ has the courage to prosecute Trump and his subordinates remains to be seen, but it's essential for the nation that the DOJ proceed aggressively with its mission, with no exceptions for those in high office. The nation as a whole demands that the DOJ show no favoritism, no deference to the powerful and the wealthy. All of them must be held to account, or Merrick Garland will fail miserably in HIS mission.
