(64,988 posts)I live in his district.
He got primaried twice because he was rejecting the radicalism of the Free-Dumb caucus.
They spent a ton of money on these primary challenges. He annihilated his opponents. He won those primaries with larger margins than in the GE.
He's a conservative Republican to be sure, but he's not a nutjob.
Despite this recent bout of integrity I think he's safe in a primary, despite his angering the cult.

Believe they are so slow we'll run over them in 2022 & 2024.

(64,988 posts)I didn't say they primaried him every year.
I worked on both Halvorson's & Brzozowski's campaigns.
I know what happens in this district.
I live here.
He got primaried twice! Fact
He trounced his primary opponent. Fact
What was your point?

(43,270 posts)In 2012, he was redistricted out of IL-11 and so HE primaried an incumbent, Don Manzullo, for Manzullo's district, IL-16. Again, he was not primaried, he was the challenger.
2014 a Tea Party freak, David Hale tried and failed to beat him in the primary.
2016 he ran unopposed in both the primary and the general
2018 Jim Marter, another Freedummie, tried and failed to primary him
2020 he ran unopposed in the Rethug primary
2 times
I was not trying to do anything nefarious, sorry if you took it the wrong way
I am sure number 3 is coming up HUGE in 2022, lolol
cheers

(6,799 posts)Eisenhower is probably pretty far up in the rankings of presidents. Definitely higher up than TFG or the Bushes is my guess.
My dad was Antifa in WW2 and he liked Ike. There's a toddler picture of me somewhere wearing an 'I Like Ike' campaign button.
ProfessorGAC
(64,988 posts)More that ilk than Eisenhower or Dirsken types.
I've talked with him a few times.
He's bought into the whole low taxes create grown & private solutions are always best philosophy.
He's just not an around the bend Gingrichian, or like this current batch of flamethrower idiots.

Eisenhower knew to tax the rich in order to build. Why can't today's Republicans admit it worked?
I vote to put thousands to work caring for our national forests. States need help preventing fire devastation and combating CC.

(64,988 posts)The propaganda machine convinced a lot of people that Reaganomics was a success, rather than the debt loading disaster it was.
So, Eisenhower style republicanism is dinosaur stuff that didn't work, even though it did for 5 of the 8 years. The overemphasis on defense spending because of the bogeyman Soviets actually depressed the economy for 3 years of Ike.
So, we know what worked (see 7 years in the 90s), and we know what didn't and Rs got stuck on "didn't".

(1,000 posts)of the "military/industrial complex." Every bit as prophetic as Barry Goldwater about evangelicals, "Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem."
Kinzinger would hardly be the only otherwise reasonable person sold on that trickle down bullshit. It really does concern me that he does identify Republican and seems to have common sense, integrity, and couth. How weird is that?
SleeplessinSoCal
(9,108 posts)But that is just the argument to vote for them. Reality is those made wealthy by "trickle down" don't care about the health of the nation's infrastructure. They are very selfish on the worst way.
Interesting how future war will target infrastructure.

(151 posts)A true gentleman, Representative Kinzinger deserves our support in finding the truth surrounding the insurrection of January 6th. He honors his oath to the Constitution and doing his duty for our nation above his loyalty to the Republican Party. I hope he and the rest of the committee work together to find and bring to justice all those who tried to rip our Constitution to shreds. Good luck.

(30,730 posts)His district could be changed and he could be out of a job.
Who would he challenge? Tammy Duckworth. Do you want that? Or, he could be plotting against our excellent governor, who will be facing a tough reelection.
The man is an opportunist. Do not trust him.
ProfessorGAC
(64,988 posts)One is governor. I think he knows he's not beating Durbin or Duckworth.
The other is big heat after the repukes finally implode and need to refocus.
Either one is wish list stuff for him, but I see those 2 far more likely than the Senate.
murielm99
(30,730 posts)He is 76. I think Durbin has been grooming Cheri Bustos for his seat. Kinzinger could give her a run for it.
ProfessorGAC
(64,988 posts)If Jay B is still governor, Durbin could run on his name & reputation. Then retire after a year, and let the governor appoint Bustos.
I don't think he'd stand a chance against DD.

(30,730 posts)We had Rauner as governor. Pritzker could not get his fair tax passed, due to all the repubbie lying and the money they spent campaigning against it.
This state is blue in the urban areas and red in the rural ones. And there is a lot of rural area!

(17,184 posts)That is, he might be actually truly affronted that this happened in our country, and determined that heads are gonna roll. I'm hoping a few of the people on that committee might feel that way. Instead of first and foremost calculating what would be to their political advantage. Time will tell.
