With a rising drumbeat of criticism, several Republican Georgia legislators are building a case for the state government to take over Fulton County elections.
The newfound power to fire local elections management, created by Georgias voting law, worries voting rights advocates, who say it could be abused for partisan purposes to tamper with the heavily Democratic county.
They see a threat predicated on relentless attacks from Donald Trump to state lawmakers that point to problems both real and imagined in the county. Though a state monitor reported sloppy management, three counts of Fultons ballots arrived at similar results and state election investigators havent found fraud.
Democrat Joe Biden beat Trump in the 2020 election, but the Republican and his followers said he was robbed and targeted Fulton County for much of their ire. Judges have thrown out several lawsuits claiming the presidential election was stolen.

I doubt a jury in Georgia would convict trump anyway.

And here we are. I expect the Dekalb election board will be taken over by the republican-led state legislature, too.

(36,446 posts)It doesn't feel like our side is taking this very seriously though. Biden's ok with the filibuster, no one on our side seems able to twist Manchin's or Sinema's arms, DiFi doesn't think our democracy is in danger, & the DOJ hasn't done anything about that clusterfuck down in AZ since the letter they sent back in June. No one knows how to demoralize the democratic base more than the Democratic Party.

Before the wall (and the credibility of the Parti Communiste Français) fell, PCF boss Georges Marchais, a rich Stalinist himself, was once asked what he would do if his party was elected to power in France. He was then asked if his party would reliquish power if the voters would vote them out. His answer, "why would they ever vote us out of power?"

You know it will happen somewhere eventually and the current SCOTUS will very likely say "yeah, that's cool".
