I'm surprised it took so long. My first run-in with a maskhole.

I have witnessed other people being hassled, but no one had ever approached me ... until today.
I was at the grocery store picking up a few items for my wife. While standing at the meat counter a middle-aged guy (who looked vaguely familiar, it's a small town), but with whom I had never spoken before walked up beside me and said, "You, know, that mask is completely unnecessary. Why would you want to wear a chin diaper?" He wasn't particularly in-my-face or threatening, but it felt intrusive and it pissed me off.
I must have been building up a vicarious head of steam over time after seeing and hearing about other people being bothered by ill-informed assholes, because I didn't hesitate for a second.
I replied, "I wear a mask because I'm 70 years old, have survived three different types of cancer, and in order to live my life I'm forced to come into regular contact with ignorant and thoughtless jackasses who don't understand that the virus and its variations don't give a shit about politics. Does that answer your question?"

He harrumphed a bit, then turned and walked away without replying.

You know, I kind of enjoyed it.

If all you're covering is your chin, you're doing it wrong, middle-aged guy at the meat counter (MAGATMC). I sincerely hope MAGATMC doesn't get infected, and if he does, that it isn't a severe case, and if it is, that he survives it, and if he doesn't, that he doesn't leave this earthly plane surrounded by only machines and strangers.

I live in a smallish repug tourist town, and have been told or questioned quite a few times about my choice to wear a mask. Aren't you vaccinated? is a somewhat frequent question. I am, and have no qualms about saying Yes, I'm vaccinated. Mostly this happens where I work, which is an old (democratic) family retail store on main street, selling a large variety of stuff. We have an army navy section, and that clientele is most likely to be anti-mask. Because this mostly happens at work I need to be polite in my reply.

I've been coming up with a different reply every month or so, when someone questions why I continue to wear a mask when I'm vaccinated. These are some of them.

I don't want to catch a summer cold.
It covers my facial hair.
It's friendlier than my real face (I have several that have a smiling mouth and are friendly)
Honestly, I don't like to brag, but I'm really smart, graduated high school at 16, college at 19, training in statistics, and, my good brain is telling me to keep wearing a mask.
Masks also prevent colds and flu.
They've become a fashion accessory.
I have friends who are immunocompromised and don't want to spread anything to them.

But under my breath I'm thinking what you said!

Mon Jul 26, 2021, 09:26 PM
Jul 2021

And I don’t mean “check” as in “investigate”. I mean it in the “checkmate” context. As in stopping or severely curtailing a negative or otherwise unwanted activity or pursuit.

Here, 11Bravo tells how he DID NOT abide a single nanosecond or molecule of such baseless bullshit. And the hapless recipient was evidently caught off-guard. Wasn’t expecting either
A) a comeback, or
B) a forceful public comeback.
And both were directly and unspinnably delivered, immediately.

I read in more than one cat book that if you have to correct bad behavior, you must do it immediately, so the cat connects the just-committed bad behavior with the response from you. If you delay, the cat won’t get the connection and will think he got shut out of your room because you were just being unreasonable.

Mind you, I’m no professional animal psychologist. But I’ve watched this gentle dominance-assertion/non-combative approach yield improved behavior, with no interruption in any tendencies toward affectionate behavior.

And blah-blah-blah!

Btw - no hitting or other adverse physical contact.

But these days I wear a mask in public anyways because it's so easy, why not be safer and set an example for others? I feel I'm helping to promote pandemic safety some how. Or solidarity, or we're all in this together.

Nothing more than a modest and very easy gesture of community. And also to verify I'm not an unmasked and un-vaccinated imposter and to protect myself from those fatally ignorant deviants that may be doing that very thing.
