A sergeant in the Atlanta Police Department was suspended without pay Monday after a video showed him kicking a handcuffed woman in the head. Police were called to an apartment complex for a domestic dispute, according to the Instagram post that accompanied the video which showed a woman on her stomach in handcuffs as a male officer kicked her in the head. Upon reviewing the video, the actions of the sergeant appear to be unacceptable, and we are also concerned with the apparent lack of reaction from another officer present during the incident, the Atlanta Police Department said in a statement. The other officers in the video have also been relieved from duty. The departments Office of Professional Standards is investigating the incident.

(14,092 posts)Good. That was my first question when I watched the video. Other police can't just stand around when a cop abuses people.

(38,454 posts)...As a sergeant in the police department, he clearly knows what he can get away with..No question at all. If he knew
he was being filmed, he would have taken the video camera, and kicked the person who taped it too.. This so called officer,
knows ahead of time what he can do and not do...After all, he is a ..."Sergeant"
....I guess he may lose his job. The arrogant monster was sure of no reprisals at all. Nada, Nothing at all....I guess
he will learn the truth if he loses his job.

(19,253 posts)Before cameras cops did this stuff all the time without it ever being in a report. They're only being held accountable because they're on camera, without this recording this goes nowhere and the officers all just deny it happened.
I think that's part of the rage built up, people have been being brutalized by the police for generations without any accountability. over the last 100 years there are thousands of arrestees who ended up dead in police custody and no one know what happened. There are 10s or 100s of thousands of people who ended up beaten and never got justice for it.
The police have been treating people this way for as long as US police departments have existed, it's engrained in their culture. Only now are we finally being able to hold some of them accountable.
