Gov. Gavin Newsom pulls his kids out of summer camp after maskless photos surface

Sacramento Bee

Gov. Gavin Newsom has pulled his children out of a summer camp after photos surfaced of his son sitting without a mask with other maskless children, a spokeswoman for his office said.

The photo began circulating on social Monday and quickly drew criticism from parents who oppose the state’s requirement that children wear masks in schools. Under the state’s guidelines, children’s camps must follow the same rules as schools.

Newsom has drawn criticism this month for releasing a policy requiring kids to wear masks in schools even if they are vaccinated, an issue Republican candidates trying to replace him in an upcoming recall election have seized on.

Newsom spokeswoman Erin Mellon said the camp two of his children attended sent an email saying it would not enforce masking guidance, but that they missed it.

“The Newsoms were concerned to see unvaccinated children unmasked indoors at a camp their children began attending yesterday,” Newsom spokeswoman Erin Mellon wrote in a statement Tuesday. “The family reviewed communication from the camp and realized that an email was missed saying the camp would not enforce masking guidance. Their kids will no longer be attending this camp.”

Between this and the French Laundry, he doesn't seem to be handling the image side of the job well.

and they are all over. Even if they are a minority compared to democrats. There are more of them in this state than many right wing states combined .

5. Yes. Another problem is the recall process is deeply flawed, in need of major reforms here

However, as long as we get out the vote, the recall should go down in flames

4 needed reforms of California's recall election rules

1. Require more signatures
2. Toughen allowable reasons for a recall
3. Establish distributive partisan requirements for signatures
4. Increase filing requirements

Once the $276 million (in taxpayer funds) gubernatorial recall is mercifully over in September, the Democratically controlled Legislature needs to seriously address deficiencies in the recall process.

In the 92 years since the provision was added to the state Constitution and 2003, there had never been a recall attempt against a sitting governor that qualified for the ballot, despite dozens of attempts. Now, two of the last three Democratic governors will have been subjected to a recall within 18 years.

The main reason: California Republicans can’t win a gubernatorial election outright, so they are using the recall as a back-door alternative.

When they couldn’t defeat a very unpopular Gov. Gray Davis in the 2002 general election, Republicans came back for a re-do the next year via the recall. (The last time California Republicans defeated a sitting Democratic governor in a regular election was in 1966.) Democrat Gavin Newsom won the 2018 gubernatorial race with 62% of the vote — the largest margin of victory for a candidate of either party since 1950.

The recall provision was designed by early-20th-century Progressives as a tool to rid the state of politicians who exhibited shocking behavior, were abusing the public trust or mishandling public funds. It was not intended to be a political crowbar for a minority party to try to force its way into an office in special off-year elections.

Only 19 states provide for recalls of governors, but most require signatures of 25% of the voters who voted in the last election. California has a ridiculously low 12%.

2. Bull. The guidelines have changed on the masking. This has nothing to do with the "image side"

of the job

It is a very dynamic situation especially that has been brought about by the delta variant, and that 50% of the populous are still unvaccinated.

The CDC has just changed their masking guidelines because they have found that breakthrough delta variant infections among fully vaccinated people, can transmit the virus to unvaccinated people.

The problem is among the unvaccinated, and those who refuse to get the vaccination. They hurt it for everyone, including those who are vaccinated

This isn't comparable to the "French Laundry" episode, expect for those who are pushing the recall because they cannot win an election in the normal way, and for those who are not even from California, just to stir things up

6. I like the recall and it should stay. Walker in Wisconsin one reason.

However, the amount of signatures needs to increase by double at least.

major reform. It has been abused by republicans because it is very difficult for them to win the Governorship in California going through normal election

8. The issues is rules for THEE and not ME

The issue is not that Newsom's kids went to a camp that did not require masks. The issue is Newsom knew about this policy prior to sending his children there and this policy is in direct conflict with the State's COVID summer camp guidelines.

This is at least the 2nd time we have seen Newsom flagrantly ignore his own guidelines on COVID.
Leaders need to walk the talk if they are to govern effectively. Newsom's personal behavior is violating this and kills trust. If you want to get people, especially those who are not in your party to follow your policies, lead by example.
