It’s not just unvaccinated adults who’ve ditched their face masks who are being hit hard by the Delta COVID-19 variant’s rapid spread. Houston’s Texas Children’s Hospital has also seen a disconcerting uptick in the number of sick kids laid low by Delta in recent weeks.

Despite the popular misconception that children who get COVID-19 never have severe symptoms and can easily shake the disease, in some instances, kids admitted to Texas Children’s with the coronavirus have landed in intensive care. Some have even been placed on ventilators.

Out of all the kids who show up to Texas Children’s concerned they may have COVID-19, “Currently, roughly 10 percent of those children who test positive do require hospitalization,” said Dr. Jim Versalovic, Pathologist-in-Chief and Interim Pediatrician-in-Chief at Texas Children’s Hospital, “and roughly one-third of those may require critical care.”

Among those children who need critical care, “some have required ventilator support,” Versalovic told the Houston Press. “We have seen severe cases of COVID pneumonia and acute respiratory distress in children. And we certainly have used ventilators when appropriate, selectively.”

meeting against a mask mandate. According to them, they "need their freedom." I'm beginning to think a whole lot of people have taken out insurance policies on kids they secretly hate.

of possible disabilities, including issues of lung, heart and brain damage.

Tragic, and also infuriating.

Many recover without incident, including those who spend time in ICU. Please stop doomsaying.

9. We don't yet know who will suffer and how many.

It was decades before researchers figured out that there was such a thing as post-polio syndrome, which affected those infected as children decades after their initial exposure.

So saying "many recover without incident" less than two years into this pandemic may well be absurdly optimistic.

Hopefully you're right, but wouldn't it be wiser--not to mention more compassionate--not to take that risk?

Please stop polyanna-ing.

We have to give this disease the respect it is due. It is NOT simply the flu or a cold.

Imagine the school board meetings this coming month.

Don’t be surprised if some turn violent.

LeBonheur Children's in Memphis, TN, reported at least the same number several weeks ago, plus multiple cases in the hospital, many of whom were from neighboring Mississippi. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson MS was full of them too.

They know people get really emotional when it comes to children.

Wards and halls full of COVID kids are gonna trip some triggers.
