Shes only 24
half way around the world,
I believe can't leave her room because of quarantine for many hours at a time
No family or mother there to lean on
Feeling pressure to live up to the hype
Gee, why is she emotionally drained.
They really should have let family come with her.

(65,010 posts)Suddenly a world class player can't make a 3 foot putt. Can't get their swing started comfortably.
Golf history is loaded with people who suddenly weren't good enough anymore, and it was not physical.
All upstairs.

(7,820 posts)And when youre a gymnast and your issue becomes you suddenly cant sense where in the air you are or how close to the ground? Incredibly dangerous. Gymnasts have literally died or been paralyzed pushing through this when they werent ready. She did the right thing

(2,008 posts)she certainly doesn't owe a detailed explanation to us.
Hopefully her support system can help her cope despite the COVID-induced isolation

(11,736 posts)She is the most dominant gymnast in the world and because she is so dominant, the judges are basically penalizing her for doing things other gymnasts can't.
That is like saying Usain Bolt had to run the 100m with one shoe off because he was blowing the doors off everyone else for the last 8 to 10 years.
There will be a gymnast in the near future who will surpass even what Biles has done, and unfortunately, because of all the stupid vicarious thrill people get, and the pressure they put on athletes, she will likely face the same shit, especially if she happens to be black, brown, or anything but white.

(3,495 posts)and bounce all over the room at a zillion miles an hour, upside down most of time, and their head just isn't into it, best to sit that one out.

(7,820 posts)Is not that uncommon-similar to what one might call the yips in other sports but for gymnasts (and for her in this case) it is about not being able to sense where in the air or how close to the ground you are. Which can be incredibly dangerous. Gymnasts have died or been paralyzed trying to just power through this. She made the right call.

She absolutely made the right decision.
Safety first.

(5,294 posts)The worst that can happen is getting beaned by a pitch.
If a gymnast gets "the yips," one wrong move could break her neck.
