to protect unvaccinated people is if vaccines start being mandated. I followed the rules. I got my shot. When the CDC thought we needed to clean surfaces, I cleaned surfaces, I changed clothes immediately upon getting home from work, I showered, changed clothes, only used wash clothes and towels once. And I would do it again. But I am tired of the COVID collaborators and hearing about how it is their body their choice, when they literally don't believe that about anything else. Require them to vaccinate if they want to dine in restaurants, go to concerts and movies, and attend schools. Start making them carry their weight. Otherwise the vaccinated will rebel.
On edit, the fact kids as of now can't be vaccinated is a reasonable justification for the masks now. But at some point, that should change. And we need to be requiring those shots.

(32,609 posts)I have never stopped wearing a mask. I have never stopped cleaning surfaces, groceries, etc.
I have no plans to rebel because people (Republicans) are profoundly stupid and I am just waiting for them to die off.

(52,162 posts)and in summer school I have only one class per day (so no shared chairs, no shared computers) I also don't shower after school each day anymore. The science changed on that. I do wear a mask in grocery stores, at work, to table in restaurants, while ordering in restaurants, etc.

some of us just do the right thing regardless of what we are "told"
This has nothing to do with spite for me. I plan to stay healthy.

(5,932 posts)Its just a mask, its not that big of a deal. The virus is raging out of control right now - we need to stop it. The mask is just another tool.

(52,162 posts)and if we let the unvaccinated just be with no consequences, there will never be and end to the masking. It is hard to hear for me with masks in many cases. And a full day of teaching in masks is non trivially difficult. Honestly, I am starting to lose patience with this. We never should have lifted the mandate for vaccinated people in May. And we should have long ago required vaccinations. At the rate we are going we are going to have to wear masks until they are growing tomatoes on Mars.

(5,932 posts)Definitely not a good situation for teaching, you have my sympathies for having to deal with that. We definitely need to get more people vaxxed. We can beat this thing! It will definitely end well before the martian tomato harvest is in!

Wearing a mask is just not that big a deal to me that I will use it as a bargaining chip for anything.

(102,276 posts)Having spent half my life in surgical or N95 masks, I really have to ask what is such the big damned deal?
Look at it this way. We could have stopped at seatbelts (mandated). But, no we added driver's-side airbags.
Then side-impact airbags. Anti-lock breaks. Traction control. and on and on...No single measure is 100%
effective any more than ANY vaccine is 100%.
Each of these measures was an incremental addition to highway safety. Just as adding mask-wearing for a fully vaccinated person is an additional measure of safety with a variant surpassing all others in infectiousness--not only to the individual, but to prevent the inadvertent carriage/asymptomatic transmission of the virus to those who cannot be vaccinated

(3,654 posts)as well as others around me. It is the right thing to do. I don't wear a mask simply to protect myself. I live in a community and I have responsibilities and obligations to that community. It if means wearing a mask to protect myself and others than so be it. I certainly am not going to have a hissy fit and not wear a mask because others are too stupid or scared to get a shot. My world view is a bit larger than that.

(115,693 posts)if it can reduce my chances of getting even a mild case of covid (and so-called "mild" cases tend to be pretty bad; they just don't result in hospitalization) or spreading it to kids who can't be vaccinated yet or people who have fragile immune systems. Yes, I am angry that there are a lot of stupid people who won't get vaccinated because reasons, but I'm not masking up for them. Masks are just not a big deal.

It doesn't take me 5 seconds to put on a mask.
It's not a big deal.

(36,301 posts)Told my wife this morning that when the Delta variant starts hitting Upper Michigan, I'll start wearing a mask again when I go out and about and I'll limit those excursions. And when I do shop to replenish the stocks, I'll be in the parking lot of the store when it first opens like I did last year.

(115,693 posts)what we are likely to do is be more demanding of requirements for masks and vaccinations in as many circumstances as possible.
