We don't own these athletes
I am not a huge fan of women's gymnastics but even I know about Simone Biles. I have to say many of the criticisms of her smack of a mindset of ownership. Yes, she is representing the country at the Olympics, I get that. But that doesn't confer ownership of her. She is a person who gets to make decisions, even ones we may not like.
As the wonderful Leslie Gore says, you don't own me.
