Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), saying the agency's credibility is in "tatters" following new advice on mask-wearing for fully vaccinated people.
Cruz spoke to Fox News' Sean Hannity on Wednesday about the CDC's revised advice, calling the decisions "absurd" and saying it was "pure politics" rather than based on science.
The CDC issued advice on Tuesday saying that fully vaccinated people should wear face masks in "public indoor settings" with "substantial and high transmission."
In previous advice on May 13, the CDC said fully vaccinated people didn't have to wear masks in most indoor settings.

Conservatives don't really understand that science readily adapts to new evidence and changing circumstances. To them, every scientific discovery and revision of a theory or recommendation is a "flip-flop" worthy of ridicule.

(11,725 posts)Trump also tried to influence the CDC heavily regarding messaging on COVID-19. There are problems that occur whenever pressure is brought to bear on what are supposed to be science based agencies dealing in public health policy.
I understand the the CDC mask guidance was based on what was known at the time regarding transmission rates, but I think they did not take into account the impact that lowering the threshold would have on a highly polarized population that was already straining against the bit regarding the pandemic and public health measures. When the CDC said "vaccinated" people didn't have to wear masks, and there was no way of verifying that people are actually vaccinated, it opened the floodgates for what we have now.
Perhaps there was criticism of the CDC here, but there is a major difference between criticizing the CDC for not seeing what their guidance would do for public health in this environment, and what Cruz is doing, which is just trying to sow more doubt and confusion for his own personal and political gain.
I don't think that it is fair or accurate to lump the two sides together. The motivations are completely different.

(36,098 posts)The CDC decisions have definitely been "absurd," and after the May 13 announcement relaxing mask use lots of people concluded their credibility is "in tatters."

(11,725 posts)Cruz is not criticizing the CDC because he is looking out for public health and safety. He is looking only to score points because he wants to sow more confusion and hurt the Biden administration. Cruz had no criticism of the CDC when Trump was in office and they were being pressured to promote Trumpian stupidity.
There is nothing to be gained by giving Cruz any kind of validity. Even is his one statement that the CDC has damaged its credibility is true, on its face, where he plans to go with it, is still wrong.
