PS just so you're not surprised when it happens, unless something dramatic happens, by mid August we'll be at 200,000 cases/day in the US. Don't say you weren't warned. More than a month ago, FWIW.

Exponential growth can be hard to understand.

Exponential growth where the rate doubles is phenomally different.

I think yes, by mid Aug it will be 200,000 case per day.

I think it'll peak about 4 to 600,000 per day. Hospitals will be turning away patients because there's not enough room. Another half million or so will unnecessarily die.
---

The GOP will point at Biden and say "See, Biden couldn't do any better than Trump".

I think the plan all along was to discourage vaccinations so this would happen. It's the only motive that makes any sense to me -- make the disaster so Trump and the GOP wouldn't look so bad in comparison. They thought it would be a slow burn of the alpha or beta variant. Delta was not in the plan.

Thu Jul 29, 2021, 06:03 PM
Jul 2021

That's what I've been saying recently. My first prediction was 200,000 by September 8. (When weekly growth was 109%). It didn't take long to get to around 140%, which accelerates the date on whch we hit 200,000.

I think the direct deaths will be lower, since we have gotten better at avoiding that particular consequence. The indirect ones might be higher as people again avoid/delay treatment for other conditions - OR - there's no room in the hospital for people seeking treatment for non-COVID conditions.

Nursing staff (those that are still hanging in) are flat out exhausted -- mentally, emotionally and physically.

Even if a nurse is vaccinated, every delta patient they treat represents a personal risk to the nurse.

I heard a CNN report which interviewed a nurse who used the term "compassion fatigue". Even though you want to help every patient, it's hard to muster compassion for folks who refused to get a free vaccination to prevent their own hospitalizaion.

Tired people make more mistakes. The staff, even though trying their best, are going to make more mistakes, which will mean more deaths.

For the staff that are in hospitals now, I have nothing but the highest regard, they are put in an impossible situation that was mostly avoidable but for the politicization of the pandemic by the GOP.

Urgent Care Report: 7/26 - 7/27/2021
Coronavirus Cases

I...hate this! It's happened, folks. We're in the thick of it. Monday and Tuesday were the worst days that we've seen at our clinic since March.

Our clinic opens at 8am. Both days we had our parking lot filled by 8:05am. Our phones refused to stop ringing. People actually walked in unmasked to scream at us and complain vehemently that the phones weren't being answered. I have had to use The Voice on these folks so often that my vocal chords are burning. You should see the angry faces of these folks! The huffing! The hopping up and down! The finger-pointing!

Our clinical staff are nearly at the breaking point. Our practitioners have dark circles under their eyes. It's obvious that between their shifts at the ER and our clinic, they need rest. That's a pipedream. We have at least another month or two in front of us.

Whole families arrived, and I mean 4 or 5 patients - over, and over again. There was no moment of peace in-between the onslaught of exposed and sick patients. We had to have "restrictive holds" repeatedly yesterday. What that means is that we just can't take any more patients. We have to see those that we have before we can take more. Wait times peaked at 3.5 hours. That's insane. We practically had to stop taking patients at 3:30pm yesterday.

We called 911 three times yesterday. At this point, the unvaccinated are showing up. They are so sick that they can't breathe, and we had one person faint, dropping right to the floor in front of our personnel. By 5pm, the flashing red lights illuminating our clinic were so alarming that you could see the concern in the faces of our patients. I try to make light of it: "Enjoy the lightshow, folks!" I'm afraid it doesn't help much.

The most concerning thing was that several of our very sick COVID patients were under 40 years old. They were referred to ER, but some refused advice, and went home. They don't believe it's that bad.

Please, if you are exposed or have symptoms and you want to go to an Urgent Care, you must seek help by 12pm. If you try to get help after that, you may have to wait till the next day. If you need a test, don't wait. Book it online at your local pharmacy. I know the appointments are at least 2 days out, but at least you won't wait 3 hours.

Above all, wear your masks everywhere. I cannot tell you how many times I had to give masks to patients who didn't have them. "Oh, I forgot it at home," - "It's in my car," - "My kids took my car and all my good masks are in there!" I also had to act like a lifeguard: "Over the nose, please!" I swear, I'm going to get myself a whistle!

Please, please, be safe. Don't take chances. Mask up, everywhere. Thanks.

I hope they have pulse oximeters to keep track of their oxygen levels because that's what'll send them to the ICU. I doubt they do, though. They're young and think they're invincible. Thanks for posting.
