19. President Biden, Apr 2021
When police respond to a person gripped by a mental health or drug crisis, the encounter can have tragic results. Now a government insurance program will help communities set up an alternative: mobile teams with mental health practitioners trained in de-escalating such potentially volatile situations.
The effort to reinvent policing after the death of George Floyd in police custody is getting an assist through Medicaid, the federal-state health insurance program for low-income people and the largest payer for mental health treatment. President Joe Biden’s recent coronavirus relief bill calls for an estimated $1 billion over 10 years for states that set up mobile crisis teams, currently locally operated in a handful of places. https://apnews.com/article/health-police-government-and-politics-mental-health-coronavirus-f8931f4907b46b49dfb4dea651d7e1e7 Yes, Rep Cori Bush, Your President is already addressing that. 23. I think post #6 addresses why
The poster is right in the sense it wasn’t a lack of funding for the Capitol police as to why 1/6 happened. There was probably some failure or worse at the top of the chain of command level but the frontline police and first responders are heroes.
I’m a disabled veteran so am interested in having mental health professionals handle mental health emergencies. I also support having a fully funded VA. |

58. A huge reason is also that dissenters must dissent or lose both
their political identity and the followers who are drawn by it. So they do this fairly often, and it's almost always innocuous.
This (1) highly publicized bill offered them (2) the opportunity to act out dissent for their donors and other followers (3) without doing harm that would lead to backlash. |

65. Well, sounds like you believe you're able to slice up that baby
without hurting it.
Most rigid dissidents may lean "radical" but are not actually extremists or aggressively antagonistic populists. JD, though, doesn't just dissent; its core of extremists is actively hostile to the Democratic Party. Hear they're posing as less alarming pragmatic Democrats now (but still, as always, more principled than the real things), because vicious social media lies, calling for people to vote against Democrats and insisting Trump was at least unlikely to be any worse, etc, lost them more of the voters they're trying to draw than gained. But their leaders haven't had personality changes, and I don't know how one would give money to them without having it used to further hostile goals. In your situation I think I'd reverse my support -- go to JD to say good things about Biden but donate to Democrats. But of course continue to vote Democrat. Whatever. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez et al are operating from within the Democratic Party because it's America's huge center of progressive power. It's where progress is made. But representing progressives of every faction makes it necessarily more moderate, and "pragmatic," than a small faction can be, which gives them plenty of opportunity to dissent. But as I pointed out, they so far are doing it within protective limits, not like MT Greene and the other self-destructive whackjobs RW voters sent. If they go too far for their colleagues, they apologize to the powers that be while counting whatever increase in donations it brought in. |

6. They had some good points
One of the main points they had was just throwing money to the police without determining what went wrong on Jan 6 and other considerations of how the capitol police handle protests by different groups on the right and left will not solve the problem. They were not voting against capitol security they were saying there were ways to make it functionally a lot better and therefore they could not vote for it.

26. What went wrong was from the very top of the executive branch.
It had nothing to do with those on the front line, alone and abandoned from those at the top.
Did you listen to any of the hearings? Did you listen to their testimony? They protected every member of our houses for more than a dozen hours as terrorists slammed their head in door, tried to gouge their eye out, called them N*****, called to grab his gun!!! Shoot him with his OWN GUN! Pepper sprayed, bear spray, stun guns, flag poles, bats, hockey stick and a whole lot of anger. One of the main points they had was just throwing money to the police without determining what went wrong on Jan 6 and other considerations of how the capitol police handle protests by different groups on the right and left will not solve the problem.
Ah, the whole 'both sides do it canard'. I have yet to see the left march on the capital to try to overturn the certification of a Presidential election while armed and carrying a guillotine threatening to hang members of our houses and the sitting VP. One member that voted no hid in a closet. Terrified and went on multiple shows saying how terrified she was. Another was in her office and found all the panic buttons disabled. They were terrified. Great call to vote against funding them. |

70. Didn't say ...
My point on how police handle protests in no way indicated that the protests or the treatments are equal. My point is that left wing protests seem to bring out a much more violent response than right wing protests. The right tried to claim the seditionists were really BLM and Antifa people trying to make the right look bad. Do you think that if a bunch of people of color and leftists attacked the capitol like this group of right wing traitors did that they would not have been met with more violence. I understand in this case Fat Donnie and his minions were doing their best to hamstring the Capitol Police and that has to be looked into so it cannot happen again. Do we need to support the capitol police sure but again just throwing money at it without the determination of the proper solutions to be implemented isn't the best idea. Though this was generated by 1/6 it doesn't mean they can't take a wider look at the operating procedures overall. Besides as somebody pointed out the negative votes didn't make a difference anyway. A lot of time politicians use a particular vote to make a point when they know they are going to lose anyway.

"So according to Cortez it was wrong for MVP to warn migrants not to come here because it’s unsafe but according to their united NO vote, it’s ok to leave Afghan translators to be beheaded & killed?" I am sorry but the 'they need to be a team player' sounds a lot like the kind of crap the Republicans do on their side. That is go along to protect the part and stay in what the leadership tells you instead of being a representative. They are elected to represent their constituents not their party. I have no problem with descent from within the ranks sometimes that is the only way to make progress. On the other hand I appear to be way more progressive than a lot of the Democrats in DU so it is understandable that we wouldn't see eye to eye on this subject.
