(CNN)Sitting in her hospital room in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Aimee Matzen struggled to breathe as she described how exhausting it is to have Covid-19.
"The fact that I am here now, I am furious with myself," she told CNN between deep, deliberate breaths. "Because I was not vaccinated."
Matzen, 44, finds herself in the Covid-19 intensive care unit at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. She is receiving oxygen treatments and hopes she stays well enough to avoid getting hooked up to a ventilator.

Matzen told CNN she was not opposed to getting vaccinated -- she just hadn't gotten around to it. Every time she planned to get inoculated, "something would come up," she said.
"I have this feeling ... if I was vaccinated, I wouldn't be hospitalized," Matzen said.

We are going to hear a lot of fake sob stories and outright lies from anti-vaxxers.

(29,194 posts)but lets save the hospital beds, the extraordinary treatments, the tanks of oxygen... for people who ARE vaccinated... or for people who CANNOT be vaccinated through no fault of their own.
I have a friend in Columbia... her best friend was in the hospital with COVID... and almost died. Her family sold everything they owned, were selling cookies in the street (and trying not to get mixed up with the protests and police)... and I sent well over $1000 to buy her the oxygen and medicine she needed...
They have vaccine only for doctors and hospital workers and people over 65. The black market has vaccines for the wealthy... for a few thousand USD.

We need to think these angry, fear-driven impulses through. Our fascist wing's full of vicious conviction that we need authorities who'll smite the people who anger them.

I don't wish this on anyone, but they fucked around and they're finding out. We tried everything to make them not do that, but nothing could change their minds.

(4,999 posts)Sounds like living in a culture that made COVID seem like no big deal.
If you knew it was a big deal, the "something" that would come up would be to get vaccinated ASAP.
But I give her credit for attempting to be honest, and I hope her story motivates someone to go get the jab tomorrow.

(63,221 posts)or publicly hostile to the idea. Sure, she procrastinated about actually getting the vaccine, and she is at fault for that, but at least she is admitting it and is deeply regretful. She wasn't one of those insane anti-vaxxers.
I wish her a full recovery and the best of luck. Hopefully she can influence others like her to hurry up and get their shots now.

We ended up getting appointments within three days of availability. The kids received first shots within 48 hours of 12-18 announcement. To this woman, I say, first, I hope you recover, but second, what? What? In the middle of a deadly pandemic, you had better shit to do than take the 30 minutes to get a fucking shot? Seriously, what is going on with these people? What is in their heads?

(2,081 posts)bleeding heart liberal. But I do care. Nobody should suffer or know pain. A good society should take care of all people, no matter how much it seems like people are prisoners of their own device. She is suffering and might not make it. She has people who love her and are worried deeply for her. They might even lose her. Shouldn't we, as a society, be better than this? Should we try to increase compassion, love, caring, empathy, sympathy, and all that is noble about the human condition in this world rather than stoop to the baser human instincts?
I'll admit, I am a very flawed person. But I am striving to be better and more tolerant of all other people, to be the anti-narcissist.

I am sorry, yes she may well die and it won't be from the lack of this administration that is desperately trying to keep the Aimee's alive.
What about the caregivers the scientists, the doctors, nurses all begging people to get vaccinated. The care givers are dying for Aimee's stupidity. I am sorry. I have no compassion for those that willfully ignore the seriousness of the pandemic and refuse to protect themselves and others. The Aimees are literally killing people.
Jerry2144
(2,081 posts)why I have sympathy for them. They may be too stupid to do what is right for them or for others. They most certainly put others at risk. But this level of stupidity deserves as much compassion as any other human ailment. We all need love, respect, and empathy. Maybe, just maybe, if we all dial our empathy up one notch, we can increase the amount of empathy in this world and make it a better place.
Love, not scorn.
We are all humans, in a world becoming more increasingly hostile (some percentage of that due to self-inflicted human stupidity). Can't we each just try to make it a little bit less hostile? just a little bit more healing and healthy?

At risk? People are dying FFS! Unvacinated are spreading the virus and though vaccinated they can spread it to me and my 95 year old mother that I home care for. They are selfish, PERIOD.
I can't forgive them, the brainwashed or the politicians that enable them. Sorry this isn't a Kumbaya moment.
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
And how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?

(83,668 posts)You are exhausted?
What about your care takers, doctors and nurses that are on their feet 18 hour shifts with, in the beginning had no protective gear because Jared sold it to the highest bidder. My family member had to wear a f**king yellow slicker, backwards for 18 hour shifts, a mask that was supposed to be used once was worn for days. The slicker was hot and cumbersome. Double masked, goggles, face shield, rain slicker and 18 hour shifts with three children at home and YOU are exhausted? @#$%^&*YTREW@#$%^&*IUYT%$#WERTYUIO you!
Aimee? Eff your tired, you and others like you have blood on your hands.
